Movistar Classic Peru pres. by Rip Curl
MOVISTAR CLASSIC PERU PRES. BY RIP CURL
Nov 3 - 8, 2008
Senoritas, Peru

COORDINATES:
5º 12’ S, 80º 38’ W

BAGGAGE CLAIM: Why have one when you can have three choices for your final destination - Piura, Tumbes or Talara.

TRANSPORT: Wherever you land there are lots of willing drivers but take note from Piura it’s 2.5 hours, Tumbes its 1.15 hours and Talara 50 minutes drive to Mancora. Your feet will take you to the good breaks in Mancora but find a driver to take you to the other breaks out of town.

ATTITUDE: Has anyone heard of Sofia Mulanovich? If you’re a friend of Sof’s then everyone is your friend. Surfing is huge in Peru thanks to their 2004 ASP World Champion - its not just the whole town behind this event, it’s the whole country! With the seaside village of Mancora starting to flourish as a summer holiday destination, there are great places to eat and sleep.

THE WAVE: Likened to Lower Trestles, Mancora is a reeling lefthander that allows the girls to unleash their whole bag of tricks. Did we mention that the water is warm too?!

PERKS: The vocal fans - Halloween, a long weekend and the ASP World Tour is going to make for one crowded beach!

PERILS: The water - it’s all about water from the bottle. Also, don’t skimp on the Yellow Fever immunization.

APRES SURF: Sleep. After surfing these amazing waves all day that becomes the number one priority. That way, you can get up and do it all again the following day!

LOCAL LIBATION: Pisco Sours: think local brandy, lemon, egg white and draw the line at just two!

EAT AT: Everywhere is pretty epic!

CAFFEINATE AT: Maybe just hydrate instead...

ASP WOMEN’S WORLD TOUR HISTORY: Reigning ASP Women’s World Champ Stephanie Gilmore took down seven-time ASP Women’s World Champ Layne Beachley with a buzzer-beater score to claim the first Mancora Peru Classic.

NOTABLE: The support of the Peru Government, Peru Surfing Federation and town of Mancora have made this event possible. Oh, and did we mention Sofia Mulanovich?

PAST CHAMPS:
2009: Sofia Mulanovich (PER)
2008: Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) - at nearby Piscinas
2007: Stephanie Gilmore (AUS)
