How I Spent My Off-Season...P-Pass Assault by World's Best
POHNPEI, Caroline Islands/Micronesia (Friday, January 8, 2010) – Well, the Australian summer has been more or less punishing for the East Coast with minimal swell to speak of. With the majority of the ASP Top 45 and Top 17 heralding from the lucky country, you can imagine that the post-holiday, pre-season preparations were dragging their feet. Fortunately, reigning three-time ASP World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 21, kept a keen eye on the swell charts and when the opportunity arose, the globe-trotting natural-footer called up the girls for an assault on one of the world’s best barrels – P-Pass. Young Australian upstart Laura Enever was there to document the proceedings. This…is their story…
Talk about a last minute trip!
So I was pretty much packing and getting ready to head down to Bells for the first ASP Pro Junior of the year. Then I got a call from Steph (Gilmore) telling me that there was this really good swell hitting this spot called P-Pass in Micronesia and we should get there ASAP!
I didn’t even know much about the break, but I heard it was a perfect righthand barrel and I would regret it if I didnt go! Haha!
So I went…
The crew: Steph, Sally Fitzgibbons and me.
The plan: To go to P-Pass for a quick four-day trip, surf our brains out, get some of the best barrels of our lives, have the best time, and then come home and get ready for the big year ahead, starting with the ASP World Juniors for me (starting the day after I got home) as well as the Roxy Pro at the goldy!
Anyway, after finally getting to Micronesia, there were no lies! The swell hit P-Pass and it was pretty much perfect. We surfed as much as we possibly could for the four days we were there (I think we surfed for about 8 hours one day… crazy!). We all got so sunburnt and were pretty much dead by the end of each day, but it was 100% worth it because we all got some of the best barrels of our lives and had such a good time!
Dusty Payne, Kolohe Andino and Carissa Moore were also over there so to watch everyone charging and getting such amazing waves was such a good experience. The trip was such an amazing, refreshing way to start of the year… smiles all round!
