Locals Fight Back On Day 2 of 2010 Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior

SOUTHPORT SPIT, Queensland/Australia (Saturday, January 23, 2010) – Queensland surfers have fought back on day-two of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Grade–5 Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior presented by Nike 6.0, as a lack of swell forced contest organisers to relocate the event from Burleigh Heads to the Southport Spit.

Despite the small, 0.5m conditions Jasper Endersby (Noosa, Qld) and Noa Deane (Coolangatta, Qld) both advanced through to Round 3 giving Australian surfers a fighting chance as the event edges closer to its conclusion on Australia Day.

The Queenslanders were part of a host of Australian surfers who set out today to level the score with their international rivals after overseas competitors dominated day-one of competition.

“The Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior is such a prestigious event and add to that the finals wrap up on Australia Day, so every Aussie wants to win,” said Endersby.
“With USD$25,000 on the line, the level of competition has gone up another notch and everyone is ripping, so you have to make the most of every wave,” he said.

Meanwhile, 15-year-old Noa Deane squeezed through to round-three after he registered his second (of two scoring waves) with less than 10 seconds remaining in his heat.

Deane is giving away a significant age advantage to his competitors, surfing against opponents up to five years his senior.

“Some of the guys try to bully me out there with tactics, but I just try to surf my own heat and I was lucky enough to scrape through today,” said Deane.
At present, the event is expected to conclude round-two today, with heats in round-three kicking off tomorrow morning, which will see the entrance of the competition’s top seeds.

The January 22-26 competition window of the 2010 Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior presented by Nike 6.0 will also see the event’s finals conclude amidst the celebrations of Australia’s national day, bolstering the already festival style atmosphere associated with Hurley surfing events.
