Gudauskas Brothers Dominate Day 1 of ASP 4-Star Breaka Burleigh Pro

[ 0 ] February 17, 2010 |

BURLEIGH HEADS, Queensland/Australia (Wednesday, February 17, 2010) – Elite ASP World Tour (WT) competitors and brothers Patrick and Tanner Gudauskas (USA) dominated Day 1 of the Association Of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 4-Star, Breaka Burleigh Pro.

As late entries, the Gudauskas brothers were forced to surf in the opening round-of-176 while many of their fellow ASP WT competitors won’t surf until much later in the draw.

However, both didn’t appear phased as Patrick blew his competition out of the water in the first heat of the day with a combined two-wave total of 15.83 (out of a possible 20), with his nearest rival, local Gold Coaster and renowned big wave surfer Ryan Hipwood also advancing with his 13.27.

“It was fun out there today, I was really hoping to get through that first heat because I hear the fore is really good so it would be awesome to see Burleigh pumping,” said Gudauskas.

“I’d never really surfed here until recently, so hopefully I can make it through a few heats and we’ll see what happens,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tanner Gudauskas also top scored in his opening round encounter with a combined two wave total of 13.00 advancing alongside New Zealand’s Matt Hewitt-Lewis (11.33) with young Burleigh Heads local Hamish Whillans unfortunately eliminated in third position with a 6.37.

Another surfer to impress on the event’s opening day was Hawaiian surfer Gavin Gillette, who many Australians would remember as the wildcard entrant that ended Joel Parkinson’s ASP World Title campaign during last year’s Pipeline Masters.

Gillette and fellow Hawaiian Dylan Goodale both advanced through to the next round with combined two wave totals of 12.40 and 12.17 (out of a possible 20) respectively.

With the swell expected to increase tomorrow, competition will resume with the last heat (heat-eight) of the round-of-176 before moving into round-two (round-of-160), which will see many top local and international competitors enter the draw.

The February (17-21) Breaka Burleigh Pro will be the first standalone professional surfing event to be staged at the iconic point-break of Burleigh Heads in almost 10 years.

Stay tuned to event’s website www.breakaburleighsurfpro.com.au for news, photos and updates relating to the Breaka Burleigh Surf Pro.

The Breaka Burleigh Surf Pro will commence on February 17 and conclude on February 21, 2010.

The event will be live web ning on the opening day. Connect to the live web at the mini-site via www.aspworldtour.com
