COOLANGATTA, Queensland/Australia (Monday, March 1, 2010) – The world’s best female surfers will hit the water for the first time this year, with Round 1 of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast scheduled to open up competition at Snapper Rocks at 9am this morning.

The first event of the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour season, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast kick-starts the ASP Top 17 at one of the most iconic pointbreaks in the surfing world and today’s Round 1 action features some dynamic match-ups.

“We still have clean waves on offer this morning and we are going to wait for the high tide to pass before getting underway with the girls at 9am,” Rod Brooks, Roxy Pro Contest Director, said. “We’ll be monitoring conditions between now and then, but we’re scheduled for a ‘go’ at 9am. Adding even more excitement to the opening event of the season, for the first time in history, women’s surfing will be televised LIVE on FUEL TV Australia.”

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, reigning three-time ASP Women’s World Champion, will kick-start her 2010 campaign today, battling Bruna Schmitz (BRA), 19, and Trials Winner Tyler Wright (AUS), 16, in the opening round of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast.

Up first this morning will be Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 19, Paige Hareb (NZL), 19, and Carissa Moore (HAW), 17, in the opening Round 1 heat.

For the first time in the event’s storied nine-year history, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast is being televised LIVE on FUEL TV in Australia, beaming the world’s best surfing right into your living room.
