Wild Weather and Surf as Final 24 Surfers Decided at O'Neill Cold Water Classic

[ 0 ] March 25, 2010 |

MARRAWAH, Tasmania/Australia (Friday, March 26, 2010) – In contrast to yesterday’s perfect weather and surf, the Association of Surfing Professionals 6-Star rated O’Neill Cold Water Classic was greeted to rain, freezing on-shore winds and wild wind-swept seas!

The remaining eight heats of round three were completed and everyone was relieved to leave the beach by mid-day.

The testing conditions brought out the best in 20-year-old Australian Stu Kennedy who found multiple good sections to score big and win.

“I like the waves, plenty of sections to really hit hard – it’s just a little cold and windy on land,” said Kennedy.

“I’m hearing the conditions will improve a lot for the week-end and I’m looking forward to the final two days for sure.”

Finding the right waves seemed the key today and Sebastian Zietz (Hawaii) and Brandon Jackson (South Africa) were right on key with wave ion both scoring excellent waves and heat winning totals of 16.93 and 16.60 respectively.

Biggest upsets of the day were current world number 3 rated surfer Bobby Martinez and Cory Lopez (both USA) who were bundled out.

With 24 surfers now remaining in the event the scene is set for an amazing finals weekend.

Winds are fore to go offshore and surf should be excellent with Lighthouse Beach the likely location for Saturday and Sunday.
