Lay Day For Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic

[ 0 ] April 21, 2010 |

DEE WHY, Sydney / Australia (Thursday 22nd April, 2010) – A lay day has been called for the richest ASP Women’s World Tour event, the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic in Dee Why, Sydney today.

Following a decision to check the backup venue of Curl Curl for better conditions with a tiny, fading ENE swell proving less than ideal for ASP competitors, contest director Layne Beachley opted to place the fifth-annual event on hold.

“There were a few contestable waves coming through at Curl Curl, but I want to give competitors some better conditions for the sudden-death Round 3 heats,” said Beachley. “Ideally, we’ll see some improved conditions by the end of the weekend.”

A southerly pulse of swell is expected through Sunday into Monday which will likely produce two to three foot (1-metre) surf across south facing Northern Sydney beaches.

When competition resumes, world no.8 Silvana Lima (BRA), 25, will square off against world no.14 Amee Donohoe (AUS), 29, in the opening heat of Round 3.

Three-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, will feature in the round’s fourth heat. There she’ll take on event wildcard winner Laura Enever (AUS), 18.

Contest organisers will meet at 7.00am tomorrow morning to make a call whether they’ll push through to Round 3.

The Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic will run from April 21 through 26, 2010 and will be web LIVE via www.beachleyclassic.com
