Second Lay Day in a Row for Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic In Sydney

[ 0 ] April 22, 2010 |

DEE WHY, Sydney / Australia (Friday 23rd April, 2010) – Surfing has been called off for the second day in a row at event no.4 of the ASP Women’s World Tour, the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic in Sydney, Australia today.

With a decreasing 1-2ft (0.5m) ENE swell lapping Dee Why beach, event director Layne Beachley opted to put the fifth-annual event on hold for consecutive days.

ASP Head Judge David Shipley said calling a lay day was a good decision.

“It’s super clean, but smaller than yesterday so a day’s surfing action wasn’t really an option,” he said. “Hopefully conditions will improve in the next few days.”

Contest organisers are hopeful in a spike in swell by the end of the weekend, which could see competition completed on Monday.

When competition resumes, world no.8 Silvana Lima (BRA), 25, will square off against world no.14 Amee Donohoe (AUS), 29, in the opening heat of Round 3.

Three-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, will feature in the round’s fourth heat. There she’ll take on event wildcard winner Laura Enever (AUS), 18.

Contest organisers will meet at 7.00am tomorrow morning to make a call whether they’ll push through to Round 3.

The Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic will run from April 21 through 26, 2010 and will be web LIVE via www.beachleyclassic.com
