FLORIANOPOLIS, Santa Catarina, Brazil (Saturday, May 22, 2010) – The title defender Gabriel Medina still following his way to win another title of Maresia Surf International. He had two title defenses on Saturday in good 3-5 foot waves range at Praia Mole. In his second heat today, he got second in the heat won by Hawaiian Sebastien Zietz, who set a new wave score record, 9.33.
“The waves was better today, but still difficult although not as bigger as on the previous days and that strong currents just disappeared,” said Medina. “I wish the waves were a little more upright giving to me the opportunity to perform my aerials and rotation turns, but I’m stoked anyway to have gone to the next round, lets see what happen tomorrow.”
Who really liked the waves conditions today was the Sebastian Zietz, the new record breaking in the event.
“It improved a lot, but i had not took anything good all heat long. Beside the higher score, I also had the worst wipe-out in the competition,” said Sebastien Zietz. “I had less than 1 minute remaining when I took off and I did not think twice and stared with strong beat that luckily tail slid, then I could handle another good turn at the end. I am happy to get the highest score.”
The Brazilians still with a majority for Sunday. Only five foreign surfers advanced two rounds on Saturday. The winner was Dion Atkinson (AUS), who won the contest for second place in the heat and opened the round 4 heat wich was won by Rodrigo Dornelles (BRA).
“I had any idea what was happening in the heat,” lamented Dion Atkinson. “It’s hard to hear anything because the wind and always when I heard the announcer was speaking in Portuguese. But I’m glad and I want to go further.”
