Martin to Defend Islas Canarias Santa Pro Junior Crown in Gran Canaria

LA CICER, Gran Canaria (Wednesday, August 4, 2010) – Second to last event on this year’s ASP European Men’s Pro Junior Series, the much expected ASP Grade-2 Islas Canarias Santa Pro Junior is set for action starting tomorrow Wednesday, August 4, and running through Sunday, August 8.

Newly located on the Canarian archipelago’s main island of Gran Canaria and set-up in the capital city of Las Palmas, the event will attract thousands of summer crowds having its main site based at one of the islands most touristic beaches, Playa de las Canteras.

Following a series of two ASP Grade-1 events that saw Medi Veminardi (REU) and Charles Martin (GLP) take top honours respectively in San Sebastian and Sopelana in July, things will get under pressure with the ASP Grade-2 ranking of the event making the ratings’ points and dollars twice as valuable.

Martin, recent winner of the ASP Grade-1 event in Sopelana in the Basque Country and defending Islas Canarias Santa Pro Junior champion, has confirmed his attendance for a much anticipated title defence campaign. Martin, a former ASP World Junior No. 3 and a favourite towards this year’s ASP European junior title, will approach the event confidently.

“I am feeling really good coming from a win at Sopelana last Friday,” Martin said. “I missed the first event so I need to build things fast and not miss out on any possible good result so I’ll try and focus on my rhythm and get things going well.”

In his last year as an ASP Pro Junior athlete, Martin has made his intentions clear on both giving his best for the year-end ratings’ Top 4 and winning the regional title. With the regional ratings’ Top 4 getting their ticket for the ASP World Junior Tour events of Bali and Narabeen.

“I definitely want to do well and finish off my Pro Junior career as good as I can,” Martin said. “I like the Canary Islands usually, the waves are looking good for the week and I am focused on making the Top 4 cut and get the chance to compete at Bali and Narabeen.”

With promising surf forecast showing waves in the four-to-five foot range for the week, the Islas Canarias Santa Pro Junior will see a field of 70 surfers gather and battle for the prestigious title.

“The first two events were great and all surfers once again showed how talented and focused they were for this year’s crown,” ASP Europe regional manager Greg Puget said. “With two events remaining and more points on offer, the Islas Canarias Santa Pro Junior will see added pressure and tension when the best European surfers aged under-21 take to the water Wednesday.”

In its third edition and having witnessed the rise of current ASP European Under-21 top athletes Maxime Huscenot (REU) and Charles Martin (GLP), the Islas Canarias Santa Pro Junior is back and is expected to deliver a fantastic show in usual consistent surf.
