Former Three-Time ASP World Champ Andy Irons at His Rawest
HANALEI, Kauai/Hawaii (Friday, August 13, 2010) – Former three-time ASP World Champion Andy Irons (HAW), 32, will be the first to admit he has a lot of demons. Following a sabbatical from professional surfing in 2009, Irons returned to the singlet this season and has been transitioning back into the new world of high performance surfing. Currently sitting at No. 18 at present on the ASP World Title rankings, Irons has exhibited flashes of brilliance this year, but has yet to live up to his own lofty standards. With the Billabong Pro Teahupoo coming up, Billabong compiled a video montage of the legendary Hawaiian as he prepares to slip back into familiar territory. This…is their story…
“I surfed because Kelly Slater did it. I surfed because it was hyped. I surfed because it got chicks. I surfed because it was the party. I surfed because I got the cool car. And I got all those cool things and they all just became…stuff…”
“That first wave is the reason why I think everyone keeps coming back…”
“I have a lot of inner demons. If I didn’t have surfing to get them out of my system…I would self-destruct…”
“I’m getting back in the jersey and I’m not winning heats yet, but I’ve got to start somewhere…”
