ASP 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz 2010 to Kick-off Tuesday in Euskadi

ZARAUTZ, Euskadi/Basque Country, Spain (Monday, August 30, 2010) – Fourth consecutive ASP men’s 6-Star sanctioned event this summer, the San Miguel Pro Zarautz presented by Euskaltel starts tomorrow Tuesday, August 31, in the Basque Country for another exciting six-day period of world-class surfing.

Second-to-last event on this year’s action-packed summer leg in Europe, the prestigious event has upgraded to a 6-Star rating in 2010, making its valuable ratings’ points and prizemoney very attractive for those looking to possibly qualify for the 2011 ASP World title Race events.

“Zarautz used to be a major event on tour back in the days where some of the world’s best ASP elite members were in attendance,” ASP Europe Regional Manager Greg Puget said. “Since its return on the ASP schedule, the event has offered one of the best infrastructure and service to our athletes and has had consistent waves year after year.”

In its fourth edition since its return to the ASP Star Series schedule, the San Miguel Pro Zarautz rose step-by-step from a 3-Star to a 6-Star rated contest, the renowned typical town of Zarautz witnessing a solid gathering of world-class athletes including past winners Aritz Aranburu (Zarautz, EUK), Tim Boal (Anglet, FRA) and Gony Zubizarreta (Vigo, ESP).

With Europeans dominating the event champions’ list so far, the San Miguel Pro Zarautz has also been the scene of intense battles where many expect to finish-off the demanding series of events with a keeper, knowing there will be a break before the last summer event on this year’s ASP European tour.

Zubizarreta, defending champion and recent equal 5th finisher in the ASP 6-Star event at Pantin, will be much expected for his return to the Basque capital of surfing, along with local stars Aritz Aranburu (former champion in 2007 and former ASP Elite member in 2008 and 2009), Hodei Collazo and upcoming talent Mario Azurza.

“It’s great to be back in Zarautz where I pretty much feel at home,” Zubizarreta said. “It’s one of the places where we get a lot of support from the local crowds so I hope we get waves and things run well.”

Known for its strong interest in surfing, local crowds will once again be a serious asset for Basque, Spanish and European surfers, the support and passion for the sport being one of a kind in Zarautz. With top seeds Heitor Alves (BRA), Raoni Monteiro (BRA), Wigolly Dantas (BRA), Gabe Kling (USA) and local star Aritz Aranburu (EUK) leading the 144-man contingent of professional surfers, the show promises once again some progressive, spectacular surfing.

A first call will be made tomorrow Tuesday at 10 AM to assess conditions and determine a possible start for the ASP 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz 2010
