ICHINOMIYA BEACH, Chiba/Japan (Sunday, September 26, 2010) – Following a lay day yesterday, today was officially announced the final day for Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Billabong Tsurigasaki Pro competition.

Billabong Tsurigasaki Pro has commenced on Wednesday, September 22, and on Day 5 the 2010 event champion was crowed. The 2010 edition of Billabong Tsurigasaki Pro boasts the total prize money of USD$85,000 on offer which is the largest surfing event in Japan for the 2010 season.

The bright blue skies are back and the swell from the typhoon Malakas has retained the six foot (2 metre) ,and with a moderate sideshore winds, the conditions were excellent for the final day.

The highlight of the day came in Quarterfinal 3 where ASP Australasia Pro Junior No. 2 Cathels executed the first and only Perfect 10 of the event.

Davey Cathels (AUS), Drew Courtney (AUS), Chris Salisbury (AUS) and Hideyoshi Tanaka (JPN) were the four athletes make the Final. Former elite tour surfer and ASP Men’s World Ranking No. 54, Drew Courtney (AUS), takes off on the opening wave of the 30-minute decider and scores a high 7.17 for his backhand moves and sets the stage for the grand final.

The athletes get more cautious since they all require higher scores. With 15 minutes remaining, Cathels scores the first excellent 8.00 for the finals for his frontside moves. Salisbury scores a 6-pointer and once gets the lead from Courtney. Courtney immediately answers back with a 6.50 and gets back the lead. However, with 8 minutes remaining, Cathels gets his 2nd excellent 8.67 points of the Final with three committed backhand moves and moves to the top. With 4 minutes remaining, Coutney needs a 9.50, Salisbury needs a 9.77, and Tanaka is comboed. All surfers make their last attempts, but not enough and Cathels takes the convincing win

“Thank you so much everybody,” said Cathels. “I like to thank everybody. First of all Billabong and my sponsors. Biggest win for me so far. The weather was a little mean but I`m stoked. I`m over the moon. Once again thank you all so much.”
