Quiksilver Pro Portugal to Hit Ericeira’s World Famous Surf Spots for ASP 6-Star Action

CAPBRETON, France (Saturday, October 16, 2010) – Portugal’s Ericeira world famous surf coast is set to host the premiere of the Quiksilver Pro Portugal, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star men’s event, starting October 19 for six consecutive days of action.

Marking the return of world class surfing to Ericeira after a two-year break, the Quiksilver Pro Portugal is already expected to deliver an exciting show, its confirmed mobile status securing the ASP 6-Star event to get any possible high quality waves of the area with Ribeira d’Ilhas as the main location.

Third-to-last event on this year’s ASP European Star Series, the Quiksilver Pro Portugal will feature some of the ASP’s best athletes, led by inform surfer and past event champion Jeremy Flores (Capbreton, FRA), World No. 15 after his recent Semifinal finish at Peniche in Portugal.

“I am super happy to return to Ericeira, it’s been a while since my last event there,” Flores said. “Ericeira is a special place for me, it’s where I got my first ASP Star Series event win, and coming from that 3rd place in Peniche makes it even better for me to enjoy this upcoming event.”

Flores, who qualified for the ASP’s elite field in 2007 has not competed on the ASP European Series for some time and will be back amongst fellow European surfers at the Quiksilver Pro Portugal, a good opportunity for both competition and spending time with the ASP European group of rising athletes.

“I am pretty stoked to compete along with many of my friends,” Flores said. “I travel alone on the ASP World Tour and it is really an individual approach so I can’t wait to enjoy hanging wit the European guys. Many of them used to be rivals so it’s fun to get back to this atmosphere and not feel any pressure.”

With the regional ratings’ race heating-up dramatically, current front-runner Marc Lacomare (Capbreton, FRA), 18, will try and seize the opportunity to secure his lead benefiting from current regional No. 2 and No. 3 Tim Boal (Anglet, FRA) and Glenn Hall (IRE) not attending the event.

“Ericeira has great opportunities in terms of waves and it’s great Quiksilver managed to put the event back on,” Flores said. “European surfing needs such events at the right time of the year and right place so hopefully things go well and we get a good show.”

Much expected for his return to competition in his home town of Ericeira, current ASP elite member Tiago Pires (Ericeira, PRT), 32, is already guaranteed to get a massive support when he paddles out next week. A past two-time event champion at Ericeira in 2005 and 2006, Pires’s presence will attract thousands to the beaches of the famous surf city.

From Lacomare’s regional solid lead to Flores and Pires’s much anticipated presence, the Quiksilver Pro Portugal is set for an exciting surf show starting October 19, 2010. Don’t miss any of it and watch the Quiksilver Pro Portugal LIVE via www.aspeurope.com
