GOLD COAST, Queensland/Australia (Thursday, February 17, 2011) - University student Noah Lane (Rainbow Beach / Burleigh Heads) was one of a host of young surfers who staked their claim as possible title contenders on day-two of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star, US$85,000 Breaka Burleigh Pro.

An increase in swell overnight saw 1.5m waves running down the iconic right-hand pointbreak of Burleigh Heads, with Lane’s polished backhand attack perfectly suited to the long walls on offer today.

Lane posted a combined two-wave heat total of 14.84 (out of a possible 20), trumping Indonesia’s Dede Suryan (12.14), Japan’s Kenta Hayashi (10.64) and Sydney’s David Vlug (9.24) who finished second to fourth respectively.

Lane, who late last year qualified for the prestigious upcoming World Tour trials event at Snapper Rocks will have the perfect preparation tomorrow when he meets reining Pipeline Master Jeremy Flores (FRA) and former world number-two Luke Egan (AUS) in arguably the toughest encounter of his burgeoning surfing career.

“I’ve had a bit of a flu for the last few days, so I haven’t been surfing as much as I’d like, but you just can’t pass up the opportunity to surf Burleigh Heads with only three guys,” said Lane.

“Getting a chance to come up against the the best guys in the world is an absolute dream come true,” he said.

Gold Coaster Brent Dorrington (AUS) and Byron Bay’s Garret Parkes also impressed today with Dorrington scoring a combined two-wave heat total of 11.17 to advance into the Round of 64 and Parkes posting an impressive 15.50 to advance into the Round of 96.

The first heat in the water tomorrow morning (18/2/11) will feature the much anticipated appearance of 1980 Stubbies Classic Champion and event wildcard Peter Harris.

Other ASP World Tour surfers set to hit the water tomorrow include the 2011 Breaka Burleigh Pro include defending champion Taj Burrow (AUS), Joel Parkinson (AUS), Bede Durbidge (AUS), Adrian Buchan (AUS), Kieren Perrow (AUS), Brett Simpson (USA), Pat Gudauskas (USA), Tiago Pires (PRT), Adam Melling (AUS), Daniel Ross (AUS), Josh Kerr (AUS), Dusty Payne (HAW) and Julian Wilson (AUS).

The 2011 Breaka Burleigh Pro marks the beginning of ASP Australasia’s Prime and Star rated tour series.

In 2010, Breaka Flavoured Milk returned professional surfing to its spiritual home of Burleigh Heads after almost a 10-year hiatus from the iconic surfing venue.

The Breaka Burleigh Pro is proudly supported by Breaka Flavoured Milk, Surfing Queensland, ASP Australasia, Channel 7, brisbanetimes.com.au, Nova 106.9fm, SEA FM, Ooh!, Coastalwatch, Australia’s Surfing Life, GCCC, XXXX Summer Bright Lager, JR Surfboards, 5 and a half Sunglasses and Air Asia.
