ASP Rules and Disciplinary Commitee Finalize Decision in Breaka Pro Incident
COOLANGATTA, Queensland/Australia (Friday, April 1, 2011) – The ASP Rules and Disciplinary Committee, which met initially on March 18, 2011, to discuss the Breaka Pro incident involving Sunny Garcia and Jeremy Flores (and has been in daily contact with athletes and law enforcement officials since), reconvened this morning and finalized discussions in relation to the incident.
INCIDENT (Jeremy Flores):
The ASP Rules and Disciplinary Committee has determined that on Saturday, February 19, 2011, ASP Top 34 surfer Jeremy Flores was involved in a one-on-one physical altercation with a non-competitor during a break in competition for the ASP 4-Star Burleigh Breaka Pro in or around the competition area.
RULING (Jeremy Flores):
Pursuant to the ASP Rulebook, Mr. Flores was immediately disqualified from the Burleigh Breaka Pro event. The ASP Rules and Disciplinary Committee has ruled that a further fine of US$5,000 be applied to Mr. Flores.
INCIDENT (Sunny Garcia):
The ASP Rules and Disciplinary Committee has determined that on Saturday, February 19, 2011, former ASP World Champion Sunny Garcia was involved in a group physical altercation with a non-competitor during a break in competition for the ASP 4-Star Burleigh Breaka Pro in or around the competition area.
RULING (Sunny Garcia):
Pursuant to the ASP Rulebook, Mr. Garcia was immediately suspended from the next ASP event (the ASP 4-Star Burton Toyota Pro). The ASP Rules and Disciplinary Committee has ruled that a further fine of US$10,000 and a six-month suspension from all ASP competition be applied to Mr. Garcia. NOTE: Mr. Garcia’s fine may be reduced should he wish to participate in Anger Management courses.
