NEW PIER, Durban / South Africa (Sunday, April 24, 2011) – Beyrick de Vries (Umhlanga) put on an unbelievable display of surfing today to beat an on-form Slade Prestwich (Scottburgh) to win the Quiksilver Pro Junior 2011 presented by the City of Durban. De Vries pulled off a series of innovative aerial maneuvers early on in the 25 minute man-on-man final to win with a heat total of 15.67 points out of a possible 20. De Vries eliminated Cape Town surfers Matt Pallet and Michael February earlier on in the day and walked away with R18 000 in prize money for his efforts.

“This win means the world to me, I have been wanting to win this Quiksilver event for a few years now and I have finally done it. The Quiksilver Pro Junior is the biggest event for junior surfers in South Africa and it’s a great honour to take the title,” said an extremely emotional De Vries.

Brendon Gibbens and Matt Bromley, both of Cape Town, impressed the judges to take out the two prizes in the Red Bull Expression Session. Gibbens was awarded R2 000 for a radical aerial maneuver while Bromley won R2 000 for the best waves ridden in the 20 minute heat.

“The final day of event was really good, the waves turned on and the weather was great. The juniors were surfing so well and Beyrick de Vries’s performance in the last heat of the day just finished it off so nicely. We cant wait for next year’s event,” said a pleased Dane Patterson of Quiksilver.

All event photos, videos, results and more can be found at the event’s website: www.quikprojunior.co.za as well as www.facebook.com/quiksilver.
