Lay Day Called for Day 4 of the Oakley Saquarema Prime

[ 0 ] May 28, 2011 |

ITAUNA BEACH, Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro / Brazil (Friday, May 27th, 2011) - A lay day has been called for the Coca-Cola presents Oakley Saquarema Prime at Itauna beach today, but the swell forecast for the next days could see the event finish in challenging conditions. Strong onshore winds, low temperatures, rain and small waves confirmed the delay in competition after the third call of the day at 2pm local time.

“Unfortunately, with the small conditions, rain and really strong southwest wind, it was clear that there was no way to run the event today (Friday),” said Event Director, Pedro Muller. But the forecast shows a huge swell coming into Saquarema this weekend.

“It´s a strong south swell,” said Muller. “It’s showing 12, 13 and 14 second periods with sets up to 8-10 feet (2-3 meters). The only thing that might cause concern is the strong winds as Saquarema can hold large swells, so we might have some good surf.”

Today’s schedule was set to finish off the remaining 5 heats from the Round of 48. With the delay in competition, a 6:30am call for Saturday morning was called to check conditions to restart the event.

Twenty surfers will fight for the title in the upcoming Round of 24 in the Oakley Saquarema Prime. The winner of the competition on Sunday will get US$40,000 in prize money out of the US$250,000 given out to the 96 competitors and 6,500 points going toward the ASP World Ranking.

The Coca-Cola presents Oakley Saquarema Prime 2011 is sponsored by Coca-Cola and Oakley with support from the State of Rio de Janeiro through the Secretary of Sport and Leisure, the City of Saquarema, CCR and the Surfing Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
