Lay Day called at the SuperSurf Internacional Prime in Brazil

PRAIA DA VILA, Imbituba, Santa Catarina / Brazil (Friday, June 3, 2011) – As predicted in the forecast, Friday morning began with small waves at Praia da Vila and a lay day was called at the ASP PRIME SuperSurf Internacional Prime in Imbituba, but forecasts show a heavy cold front arriving on the Santa Catarina coastline with predominant South winds and big waves for the ASP PRIME event this weekend in Brazil.

“We don’t have good enough conditions today (Friday) and the waves are too small to continue competition,” said Event Director, Evandro Abreu. “According to the forecast, the weather should change today and we still have two days in the waiting period to complete the event, which will probably be in huge waves, similar to the swell that hit the area last weekend (8-10 feet, 2-3 meters).”

Out of the 96 athletes that began the event, only 24 remain in contention for the title in Imbituba. The majority is from Brazil, with 13 surfers still in competition. In addition, there are three Australians, three Americans, two Hawaiians, two from New Zealand and one from South Africa.

The SuperSurf Internacional Prime is an ASP PRIME event and will distribute U$ 250,000 in prize money and the winner will take home US 40,000 and 6,500 ASP World Ranking points.

The SuperSurf Internacional Prime 2011 is presented by Peugeot and produced by Editora Abril. This ASP Prime event is also sponsored by the State of Santa Catarina and FUNDESPORTE and with the support of The City of Imbituba, FECASURF and the Surfer’s Association of Imbituba with exclusive coverage by ESPN Brasil.
