ARPOADOR BEACH, Rio de Janeiro/Brasil (Thursday, July 7, 2011) – The Brazil Open of Surfing was confirmed and will take place at Arpoador Beach, known as the birthplace of Brazilian surfing and the current home of the ASP World Tour which took place in May. Rio de Janeiro will be buzzing again in late October with the biggest attraction being the first ever ASP World Junior Championships held in Brazil.

The competition begins with a 6-Star ASP World Star Tour event from October 18-23, distributing U$145,000 in prize money. In total, 144 surfers worldwide will fight for the title and the U$20,000 first place prize.

Beginning on October 24th, the 48 best professional surfers and 18 best girls Under 20 will compete for U$125,000 in prize money in the Brazil Open of Surfing at the ASP World Junior Championships (part of the ASP Pro Junior Series) which arrives for the first time on Brazilian shores and which will be part of a special project that promises to excite one of the most charming lefthanders in the world for 15 consecutive days.

The Brazil Open of Surfing will be Stop No. 2 of three annual ASP World Junior Championships that will announce the world champions. The first event will be the Oakley ASP World Junior held in Indonesia from October 3-14. The final event is the Billabong ASP World Junior Championship in Australia scheduled for January 2012.

Plus, the attractions don’t stop there. Besides the two main competitions, event organizers will promote other action sports including skateboarding, a BMX contest, the traditional Nighttime Air Show, concerts and film screenings.

“The responsibility increases each year with the success of past events,” said Sergio Lindemann, director of Adding Sports and the Brazil Open of Surfing organizer. “This year, we brought an exclusive event for the first time to Brazil and our idea is to solidify Rio de Janeiro as the setting for these kinds of events. Our goal is to make this a historical sporting event.”

The official event schedule will be released soon.

The Brazil Open of Surfing is provided by Adding Sports with the supervision of the Rio de Janeiro Surf Federation and with the support of the Favela Surf Club and the Arpoador Surf Club.
