Owen Wright (AUS), 21, current No. 6 on the ASP World Title Rankings, is battle ready for the upcoming Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay.

JEFFREYS BAY, South Africa (Sunday, July 10, 2011) – Owen Wright (AUS), 21, 2010 ASP World Tour Rookie of the Year and current No. 6 on the ASP World Title Rankings. A 13th on the Gold Coast, followed by Equal 5ths at Bells and Rio and Mr. Wright is leading the goofy-footed charge for 2011. In addition to bagging clips for an upcoming film project with Kai Neville, Lost Atlas, Wright has been recharging his batteries at his old stomping grounds of Culburra as well as posting up in Fiji for a week. We caught up Owen before his departure to South Africa’s perfect righthander to see where he was at before re-donning the contest singlet. This…is his story…

How have you been spending the 7/8 weeks since the last event in Brazil?
I spent a lot of my time down in my old home town of Culburra surfing epic waves and hanging with my mates. It was the best. Then I went to Namotu for a week which was epic – I surfed perfect Restaurants and Cloudbreak. I’m so bummed I wasn’t on tour when Fiji was an event – there should definitely be an event back there in the future.

You’re currently leading the goofy-footed charge on Tour at present and you’re having a significantly better start to this season as opposed to 2010. What are your motivations and goals for the year?
I’m definitely feeling more comfortable and more motivated than last year. I’m really enjoying being competitive and I hope to continue having fun and getting some better results than last year.

You had a good run at Jeffreys Bay last season and it’s obviously a wave that very much suits your surfing. Can you describe your affinity with the wave?
Last year, Jeffreys was my favorite event hands down. I had never surfed there before, but after my first wave I was hooked on the wave. I can’t wait to get back there this year.

Who are the biggest threats out at Jeffreys Bay?
I think the usual guys that always perform well in most events are going to go well here because the wave is so good. I think come Quarterfinal time, it will be made up of mostly of Top 10 surfers.
