SuperSurf ASP World Masters Championships is Back On

[ 0 ] July 29, 2011 |

Former ASP World Champion Shaun Tomson will surf in the opening heat of Grand Masters competition.

ARPOADOR, Rio de Janeiro / Brasil (Friday, July 29, 2011) – The SuperSurf ASP World Masters Championships is back ON this morning in one-to-two foot (.5 metre) waves at the lefthand pointbreak of Arpoador after uncontestable conditions forced competition off yesterday.

Today’s events are scheduled to see Round 2 of Grand Masters competition kick things off for the days before moving into Round 3 of Masters competition.

“The forecast was showing better conditions for today, better period, but it’s still small,” Roberto Perdigao, SuperSurf ASP World Masters Contest Dirctor said. “We have a schedule to follow, so the surfers decided to go out today, so we have the second round of Grand Masters, and the third round of Masters. Maybe put the event on hold during high tide, and come back around 3:00pm to try and get the late afternoon when the tide is coming down, and probably get another Master’s heat to get ahead of the schedule. The forecast looks better for tomorrow.”

The SuperSurf ASP World Masters Championships utilizes a Round Robbin format, which allows surfing’s icons the chance to compete in five non-elimination rounds. The early-round’s top performers gain points to qualify for the man-on-man Quarterfinals.

Up first this morning will be Shaun Tomson (ZAF), Glen Winton (AUS), Ian Cairns (AUS) and Ze Alla (BRA) in the opening Grand Masters heat.
