Quarterfinalists Decided at SuperSurf ASP World Masters Championships

Victor Ribas has gone undefeated in all five of his SuperSurf ASP World Masters heats.

ARPOADOR, Rio de Janeiro / Brasil (Saturday, July 30, 2011) – With time winding down in the waiting period, the sport’s most legendary surfers battled through a marathon day at the SuperSurf ASP World Masters Championships at the lefthand piontbreak of Arpoador to decide the Quarterfinalists for the Masters (Under 50) and has narrowed the Grand Masters (50 +) to Round 5.

The surfing icons are competing in a round-robin format, which allows competitors to surf in five non-elimination heats while keeping their top four results to eventually move to a man-on-man format from the Quarterfinals on.

Victor Ribas (BRA), former ASP World Tour campaigner, has led the charge in the Masters division by qualifying for the Quarterfinals with five consecutive heat victories, making him the favorite entering the elimination rounds.

“When I started this contest I was very worried,” Ribas said. “Then I just kept doing well. I am so happy to be winning and to go to the quarterfinals. The waves have been hard, and we all hope for good waves tomorrow.”

Guilherme Herdy (BRA) was another Brazilian to ignite the small, tricky conditions on offer at Arpoador to take three heat victories to earn his spot in the Quarterfinals.

“It feels so good and I’m so happy to be here doing this contest with all the Masters,” Herdy said. “It’s a very special time for me. To have this result is amazing. I hope to keep doing well, and have some more wins.”

She Lopez (USA) edges his way in to the SuperSurf ASP World Masters Quarterfinals when he defeated his heroes Luke Egan (AUS), Mark Occhilupo (AUS), and Tom Curren (USA) via a countback.

“Wow, I can’t believe it,” Lopez said. “The tie was with Curren, Occhilupo, and Egan – all my favorite surfers. I just don’t know what to say. I wish I could flip a coin and give it to one of them.”

Shaun Tomson (ZAF) continued his tear in the Grand Masters division, earning the day’s highest heat total of 15.90 with stylish backhand surfing to move one step closer to a potential ASP World Grand Masters title.

“Yes, I’m thrilled to be into the Quarterfinals,” Tomson said. “I was nervous about that last heat because today there’s a ridge running through the wave that makes it difficult on your backhand, but I did what I needed to do, and I’m ecstatic to be in the quarters!”

Michael Ho (HAW) has been another Grand Masters competitor to prevail over the small conditions on his backhand at Arpoador and hopes to solidify his spot in the Quarterfinals in Round 5.

“I’m really happy,” Ho said. “The waves haven’t been that good for us, it’s been inconsistent. But, you have to make due, and I’ve been making due, I guess. So far I’m in (the Quarterfinals) and hopefully the waves get better and everybody’s gonna’ do a little better surfing.”
