COOLANGATTA, Queensland/Australia (Monday, August 15, 2010) – Tyler Wright (AUS), 17, has claimed the 2011 ASP Women’s World Tour Rookie of the Year Award, finishing a season-end 4th amongst the most talented crop of female surfers ever to grace the ASP Top 17.

No stranger to the elite level of competition, having already scalped two ASP Women’s World Title events (O’Neill Women’s World Cup in 2010 and Beachley Classic in 2008) as a wildcard, Wright made her presence immediately felt as a full-fledged member of the ASP Top 17.

“Competing against the top girls in the world like Steph (Gilmore), Carissa (Moore) and Sally (Fitzgibbons), on a full time basis really inspired my surfing and making the final in the first event of the year was definitely a highlight for me. It’s also been pretty cool having my own pass and not being someone’s plus one anymore,” Wright said.

Encouraged by the juggernaut performances of then-ASP Women’s World Champion and former teammate Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 23, Wright joined the vanguard of young girls this season who break performance barriers every time they put on the singlet.

“Steph (Gilmore) set such a high bench mark that of course it was going to inspire so many surfers like myself and many others to come and try to match it,” Wright said.

While this year’s ASP Women’s World Title season was somewhat abbreviated (finishing in early August), Wright looks forward to a potentially strengthened tour in 2012 and will look to focus on improving her surfing in the offseason.

“The great part about it is that we can go surfing and searching for seven months,” Wright said. “But I hear there’s an awesome ASP Women’s World Tour being put together for next year so I’m really looking forward to that.”
