Coastal Edge ECSC presented by Vans Returns to ASP North America Schedule

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia / USA (Thursday, August 18, 2011) – After a several-year hiatus from the ASP North America schedule, the Coastal Edge ECSC presented by Vans has returned as an ASP 4-Star for 2011 and will be held in conjunction with the Coastal Edge ECSC Vans Pro Junior in Virginia Beach from August 22 through 28.

The prestigious East Coast event, which has roots that run as far back as 1962, not only offers crucial points towards America’s top up-and-comer’s ASP World Ranking, but also represents the final stop on the 2011 ASP North America Pro Junior series, marking the last chance for under-21 competitors to qualify for the ASP World Junior Tour.

Jeremy Johnston (New Smyrna Beach, FL), 25, defending ECSC winner and East Coast standout, will return to Virginia beach to defend his title at the newly-rated ASP event and is eager to be surrounded by the action sports festival that will encompass this year’s Coastal Edge ECSC presented by Vans.

“I won last year when the waves were pumping and I was just so stoked,” Johnston said. “This is always a sick contest with a good vibe and it’s always a fun event to be a part of. I hope we get some swell again this year.”

Johnston, who is an event wildcard, has been building his seed on the ASP World Ranking this year via the ASP Star events on the ASP North America calendar and is out to capitalize on the vital points on offer in Virginia Beach this year.

“It feels really good to get a wildcard into a 4-Star,” Johnston said. “This contest is great for East Coast guys like me. There is a lot of talent on the East Coast and it’s great to have an ASP event with legitimate points without having to travel to the West Coast.”

Michael Dunphy (Virginia Beach, VA), 21, former ASP Pro Junior standout and Virginia Beach local, is one East Coast wildcard who is hungry to compete against top-level talent at his home break.

“It’d be cool to do well here at my home break,” Dunphy said. “I travel all year for contests and it’s really nice to have everyone come here and for me to have an event at home. It’ll be sweet to see the top guys coming to Virginia Beach, because I don’t think most of them have been here before. Hopefully we get some waves.”
