Scoring Waves with Billabong Pro Tahiti Head Judge Pritamo Ahrendt on Surfline
TEAHUPO’O, Taiarapu/French Polynesia (Tuesday, August 23, 2011) – The job of an ASP judge is far from an easy task. While the judges break down each ride with a fine-toothed comb throughout a contest, their decisions are often subject to criticism from passionate enthusiasts. With the Billabong Pro Tahiti awaiting a colossal swell, Surfline.com caught up with Pritamo Ahrendt, the Head Judge of the Billabong Pro Tahiti judging panel, to get his insight on how the ASP Judges break down rides at Teahupoo from inside the tower. This… is their story…
Just before 7am on the third lay day of this event, with a big decisive swell on the way, event head judge Pritamo Ahrendt is sitting on the deck of one of Billabong’s control center houses, facing directly out to the break. The call’s just been made to pull back; the surf’s a lazy four-feet-plus and a weird little onshore wind has left a bump on the surface overnight.

Once again the Tahiti competition has proved how biased the judges really are. How can one possibly say Kelly beat Owen in the final? That was perhaps the biggest insult of all. The reputation of competitive surfing is at an all time low. Fire these useless judges and replace them with people who can actually surf and do not have very clear obvious favorites.
