Cracking Day Of Women’s Surfing At SriLankan Airlines Pro

[ 0 ] September 1, 2011 |

ARUGAM BAY, Sri Lanka (Thursday, September 1, 2011) – This morning at the SriLankan Airlines Pro the call was made that the women would take to the water to finish off Round 1 and complete Round 2 in the punchy two to three feet (1.5 meter) waves peeling down the Arugam Bay point.

Malia Manuel (HAW) was impressive again in her Round 2 heat, putting her trademark style and flair to work her way through to the next round. She’ll now face off against Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS) and fellow Hawaiian Nage Melamed (HAW) when competition resumes.

“I haven’t made it past the round of 24 in a while, so this feels great,” Manuel said. “There were pulses and lulls, I was just glad to get some waves that walled up. I love surfing right points, it’s great to be in Sri Lanka because there are so many.”

Sarah Baum (ZAF), the young South African added a few more scalps to her list, finishing first in her heat against Pauline Ado (FRA), Marie Dejean (FRA) and Freya Prumm (AUS).

“I don’t think about the names I’m surfing against, I just think of it like I’m surfing against red, yellow or blue,” Baum said. “I’m so happy to have an ASP event for the girls at such a great place. The waves are super fun, it’s hot and I’m loving it.”

Courtney Conlogue (USA), the top seed at this year’s SriLankan Airlines Pro show why’s the one to beat. Conlogue prowled the lineup, caught the best waves and tore them to pieces.

“I had a different plan going into that heat, but I had to change it with the conditions,” Conlogue said. “Luckily I found myself on the best waves. I just go out there and try to improve with every heat, as long as I do that I’ll be happy.”

The event was called of at 11:30am local time due to heavy trade-winds. A call will be made at 6:30am tomorrow for a possible 7am start for the Men’s WLT or Women’s 6-Star competition.

The event will be webcast live on www.srilankanairlinespro.com
