The SriLankan Airlines Pro Is Heating Up

[ 1 ] September 2, 2011 |

ARUGAM BAY, Sri Lanka (Friday, September 2, 2011) – Day four of the SriLankan Airlines Pro was greeted once again with clean, long two to three foot surf (1.5 meters). The conditions were the perfect canvas for the women to showcase their full repertoire.

Sarah Mason (NZL) the 16-year-old New Zealander took down ASP Women’s World Tour veteran Jessi Miley-Dyer in a goofy vs goofy battle. Mason picked the eyes out of the sets, put herself on the best waves and blasted her way through to the Semifinals.

“It was kind of slow so I knew I had to get the right waves,” Mason said. “I’m trying not to think about the semis, I just want to keep going under the radar.”

Lakey Peterson (USA) took out the heat of the event so far against Malia Manuel (HAW). The surf turned on and the girls traded blows, going bigger and bigger with each wave. In the dying minutes Manuel was left needing a 7.50 (out of a possible 10), she snared a runner, tagged it all the way down the point and was left with a 7.45.

“It was so close, I knew she (Manuel) could get the score so I’m really happy to get through that one,” Peterson said. “I’m trying to qualify for the ASP Women’s World Title race, so I just want to keep this roll going.”

Courtney Conlogue (USA) defeated Dimity Stoyle (AUS) in another close one. Both surfers fell on set waves leaving the door open, but it was Conlogue who snuck over the line.

“I feel like I didn’t surf that well in that one,” Conlogue said. “Hopefully I just got the bad heat out of the way and it’s all up from here. I’ve been surfing so much and with this heat I’ve been getting really tired, so I might just take it easy from now on.”

Pauline Ado (FRA) won the last heat of the day over Sarah Baum (ZAF), before the wind came up and competition was called off. A call will be made at 6:30am tomorrow with the Men’s WLT Round 2 and Women’s 6-Star Semifinals on standby.

The event will be webcast live on www.srilankanairlinespro.com
