Courtney Conlogue Dominates Round 3 of ASP Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro

PLAYA DE PANTIN, Galicia / Spain (Friday, September 16, 2011) – The ASP 6-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Women’s Pro ran through to complete Round Three of competition with defending event champion Courtney Conlogue (Santa Ana, CA) 19, stepping into top gear with a near perfect performance in small 2-3ft waves. Due to the inconsistent conditions event official decided not to run Quarter-finals or Round Four of the men’s ASP 5-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro.

Conlogue, who has improved her performance in each of her heats, continued with the same pattern as she blasted a punchy left with a one-two combination of powerful backhand hacks to receive a near perfect 9.47 out of 10, the highest of the event.

“Every single heat I just try and improve on the previous one in each contest. I try not to peak too soon. I am experimenting with heat strategies and working out what to do and I am looking forward to the Quarterfinals.”

Defending her Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro title, Conlogue feels at home in the Galician waters and has no trouble returning to Pantin for her 2011 title defence. Her two-wave combined heat total of 18.14 out of 20 showed she is well and truly focused on the job at hand.

“The waves are definitely really fun. It is a little tricky but I managed to pick a few waves and gave it all I had. It is really great to be back in Spain. I love it here so much and I like coming back to do this event each year because we have such a good time here.”

Malia Manuel (Kauai, HAW) 18, laid down a series of critical forehand snaps on her opening wave to receive a 6.77 out of 10 and gain control in a tough encounter against former ASP World champion Sophia Mulanovich (PER) and experienced campaigner Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS). Late in the 30-minute encounter, Manuel drive the nail home with another impressive right to obtain a combined heat total of 13.87 out of 20 and advance ahead of Mulanovich who placed second.

“I was very lucky that fun right came to me. I was watching the heat before mine and I saw Cannelle (Bulard) get a right in the excellent range so I took that into consideration and it turned out to be a good thing. It was a wave catching contest as we all caught a lot of waves and I was just lucky I caught those couple that opened up for me.”

Manuel, currently sitting in 13th position on the ASP Star World rankings, is on the verge of possibly qualifying for next year’s elite ASP Women’s World Tour and is looking to gain as many ranking points as possible is the remaining two events on the 2011 women’s Star tour schedule.

“There were a lot of nerves out there in the small conditions and to get the valuable points for the rankings. I am on the bubble to try and qualify so just to survive another heat and taking it day by day is really helpful.”

Cannelle Bulard (St Leu, REU) 17, kept her momentum in a feverish heat which saw all surfers taking many waves in a desperate search for scoring rides. Bulard opened up with a 7.33 out of 10 which contained a flurry of backhand snaps to gain confidence in the low scoring matchup and fend off all challenges thrown down by her competitors.

“I got a good right at the start and then another little score and it was enough to get me through the heat so I am very happy to make it and get into the next round. The waves are small today but it is okay.”

Bulard kept to her game plan of selecting a peak further down the beach and her choice paid off with her excellent start. As to be expected she was not the only surfer with that idea. Her frantic search for a backup score eventually came late in the heat with another well ridden right-hander.

“Like yesterday I went to the other peak down the beach because I don’t like the right that breaks off the headland. So I watched it before my heat and I saw that there were lefts and rights. Erica (Hosseini) I knew she would also go there because she loves the lefts too. So we were on the peak together but it was nice. We each took our waves. Actually I took everything that came through. (laughs)

A first-call will be made tomorrow, Saturday at 10am with women’s Quarterfinals followed by men’s Round 4 and then women’s Semifinals through to the crowning of this year’s women’s ASP 6-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro champion.
