LOWER TRESTLES, California/USA (Saturday, September 17, 2011) – Dane Reynolds (USA), 26, and Jordy Smith (ZAF), 23, have withdrawn from the Hurley Pro at Trestles, Event No. 7 of 11 on the 2011 ASP World Title seasons, citing rib injuries. Reynolds has yet to surf an elite tour event this season, suffering from a number of injuries. His current rib injury was sustained during a free surfing trip in Japan in late August. Smith suffered his current injury during the Billabong Pro Tahiti in late August. While both surfers were hopeful their respective injuries would heal before the start of the Hurley Pro at Trestles, they will unfortunately not be in solid enough form to compete against the world’s best surfers this coming week.

Adam Melling (AUS), 26, first alternate for the ASP World Title events has accepted his position with the withdrawal of Reynolds. C.J. Hobgood (USA), 32, second alternate, declined the opportunity to surf in the Hurley Pro at Trestles, but has yet to provide a reason. Third alternate and former ASP Dream Tour campaigner Tom Whitaker (AUS), 31, has accepted a spot in the event with the withdrawal of Smith.

Surfline, official forecaster for the Hurley Pro at Trestles, are calling for a series of small south-southwest to south swells to move in over the first few days of the event waiting period to offer contestable surf. Smaller, fading surf will prevail for the last couple days of the waiting period.

Event organizers will convene tomorrow morning at 7am to assess conditions for a possible 8am start.

When competition commences, up first will be Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, Jadson Andre (BRA), 21, and Travis Logie (ZAF), 32, in the opening heat of competition.

The Hurley Pro at Trestles will be webcast LIVE via http://www.hurley.com/hurleypro/

That’s a shame that 2 great riders couldn’t compete. But you have to make the best of the hand you’re dealt. Regardless, it was awesome!

I’m glad to see this draw. I pray that everyone makes the best of it. I like all the last minute 8′s.
