Short Day Of Competition At The Billabong Pro Junior Asia

Surigao Island, Philippines (Friday, 23 September, 2011) – The swell started to drop at the Billabong Pro Junior Asia presented by Sony Ericsson, Cloud 9 today. The surf was smaller and way more inconsistent, but with some fun waves still coming through the call was made to run the last three heats of Round 3.

Jordi Watson (NSW/AUS) sent fellow Australian Soli Bailey (QLD/AUS) packing in the first heat of the morning. Watson played the waiting game, taking off behind the peak on two of the best waves on the day, scoring deep tube rides and big points.

“I remember surfing against the older guys when I was Soli’s age,” Watson said. “I’d get over excited and try to catch any wave out there, but now I’m more patient and it really paid off in that heat.”

The second heat of the day was a controversial affair with Jake Halstead scoring an interference against Wade Carmichael. At the beginning of the heat neither surfer had priorit y when a wave came through, Carmichael was in position for the right and took off when Halstead took off on the outside and attempted to go left. The judges deemed that the wave Cloud 9 is predominantly a right hander and that interference calls would favour the surfers going right.

“It was a weird one, there wasn’t really any lefts so I don’t really know what he was thinking,” Carmichael said. “The right looked really good, but these things happen sometimes in competition. I got another wave with a nice tube and it was enough to get me through the heat.”

Oney Anwar (IND) won the final heat of the day over Max Longhurst (SA/AUS) with a tube and one of his trademark aerials. Anwar will now face Wade Carmichael in the Quarterfinals.
