ASP Top 17 Confirmed for 2012 Dream Tour Season
Malia Manuel (HAW), 18, will lead the rookie class on the 2012 ASP Women's World Tour.
COOLANGATTA, Queensland/Australia (Thursday, September 29, 2011) – With the completion of the final stop on the 2011 ASP Women’s Star Series, the ASP 6-Star Billabong Girls Azores Islands Pro, the elite ASP Top 17 have officially been confirmed for 2012.
The ASP Top 17 is comprised of the Top 10 finishers on the ASP Women’s World Tour from 2011, the Top 6 from the Women’s World Ranking and one ASP Wildcard to round out the roster.

Complimenting one of the most dynamic fields women’s surfing has ever seen, the 2012 ASP Women’s World Title season could potentially have some exciting new events.
“We’re currently in discussions with a number of new potential event licensees for 2012,” Brodie Carr, ASP International CEO, said. “We’re hopeful that these will come to fruition and provide an enhanced platform for this incredible group of athletes to perform on.”
Joining the ASP Top 17 for the first time in 2012 will be rookies Malia Manuel (HAW), 18, Lakey Peterson (USA), 16, Sage Erickson (USA), 20, and Justine Dupont (FRA), 20. The ASP Wildcard has yet to be determined.
The first stop on the 2012 ASP Women’s World Tour will be the Roxy Pro Gold Coast.

When will the 2012 women’s tour list come out? 2011 was a real disappointment. World Tour over in summer. Starred events over in September. No Hawaii at all? At a time when you have a Hawaiian World Tour champ and a California overall points champ? Yah, the economy is bad but this year was an embarrasment.
We’re as disappointed as you were. The ASP Top 17 list is released. 2012 schedules released in November. Hopefully sponsorship support ramps up in the coming years for the girls as they are absolutely ripping.

im from new zealand so am obviously biast, but the reason i want sarah in because of her age, having a young gun think of how far she can take it, but on the other side of the coin, she will easily qualify in the future i would imagine, but still, she deserves it as much as any body else
Melanie Bartels needs to be back on the tour. She needs a sponser too so she can get to the events. She is the 1st women to do airs an in event. Even Kelly Slater said in a surf video she is the best woman surfer he has every seen.

How come no Chelsea Hedges? She’s ranked 11 with all her placings either a 5th or 9th except 3 or 4 injuries. A former world champ and without a doubt one of the better surfers on tour. What gives? Has she retired?
I agree there should be more spots if people like Chelsea are dropping off the tour.
Love the amazing surfing from the young guns on tour but would love to see one of the older women get on a roll & pull an upset to win the title next yr.
I agree on Melanie Bartels. That girl is all heart & soul.
You would think if the points were even after 5 events you would go to 6 or 7 events and that the points that Sarah earned in the CT events would count for something ?!?!
I would like to watch Alana Blanchard next year on Tour and like ”Bender” i suggest you consider more athletes in the Top, maybe 23 or more. And would be interesting more events on Tour, finishing the season at the end of the year…
How many events are there in 2012 for sure? And how many are pending? Any chance they’ll get Maui back?
Are the ASP considering more women in the top tier? I think with the level of their surfing, the amount of girls ripping and the increasing popularity of the womens series you could easily add another half dozen surfers, maybe more.
It can be up for discussion. Who didn’t make the cut that you would like to see competing for the ASP Women’s World Title?

Sarah Mason for sure! She’s one of the new breed of female surfers who are pushing the boundaries of women’s surfing. She’s exciting to watch & should’ve qualified (strange tie-breaker rule).
I totally agree, Sarah Mason definately has the potential to be a title contender the way she surfed this year. Very unlucky to just miss out on the count back.
Congrats to all the girls though, the level of womans surfing took another massive step up this year. If they keep on this trajectory they’ll overtake the men in no time!

It’s possible that the wildcard could go to next in line on the qualifiers, but it’s likely that it will go to Jacqueline Silva, who was injured at the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach this season.
We want Melanie Bartels back on the tour. Somebody please sponsor her so that she can get to events and get the points she needs to get back on tour. We would but we’re a non-profit. Therefore, we no mo money li’dat. GO MEL!!!!
Just like in heat count backs; you reward the surfer with the highest wave score rather than the highest 2nd wave score…
What’s the deal? Sarah Mason and Justine Dupont tied on points for that 16th spot – both with the same best result but Sarah with a better 2nd best result than Justine. Surely Sarah would get through on countback?
Countbacks work on best five results, then best four, best three and so on. Justine and Sarah tied on best five results (at 6,800 points) and at best four results (6,000 points), but at their best three results, Justine has 5,200 points while Sarah has 5,080 points. Very close, but Justine gets the nod.
That seems wrong. Definitely think it should be the other way round and reward better top performances rather than better 5th or 4th ranked performances and so on.
Haven’t found anything regarding this in the ASP rule book so has this rule been made up on the spot given this outcome?
Appreciate the feedback. Rule has been in the ASP Rulebook for several years now:
Article 6.06: Subject to Article 6.05, for all ties at World Tour, Prime, Star, WLC, LQS and World Junior Events, if there are any ties on year-end rankings they will be distinguished in the same manner that ties in heat tabulation are distinguished (i.e. instead of determining the break by the best 9 Events, use the best 8 and then the best 7 etc). If Surfers have equal places and therefore an unbreakable tie, the final rankings will show them as equal for seeding purposes the prior year rankings will decide the tiebreak.
We understand it’s a frustrating situation being from New Zealand and seeing a surfer like Sarah come so close to qualifying. However, in this instance, Justine earned the spot. We look forward to Sarah campaigning again next year as she’s an incredibly talented surfer.
