CANGGU, Bali/Indonesia (Sunday, 9 October, 2011) - The Oakley World Pro Junior Bali returned to Echo Beach, Canggu today to take advantage of the more consistent swell and offshore winds. Competition is heating up as competitors left in the event get closer to the Final and the lead in the ASP World Junior Title Race.
Davey Cathels (AUS) stormed into the Quarterfinals of the Oakley World Pro Junior today after taking down one of the in-form surfers of the event, Beyrick De Vries (ZAF) in Round 4. Cathels put his board on rail, surfing sharp and precise, earning two excellent scores, an 8.50 and a 7.67 (out of a possible 10).
“I’ve been staying with the family instead of the boys and it’s put me in a different headspace, it seems to be working,” Cathels said. “I’ve also spent most of the year doing ASP Prime and Star events and had a few first round losses, and that teaches you a lot about your surfing.”
Vasco Ribeiro (PRT) scored a huge come-from-behind victory over Shaun Joubert (ZAF) thanks to 2 big turns and a massive air-reverse, earning a 9.50. Joubert had a last minute attempt to claw back the lead, requiring a 7.50, but came up short netting a 7.33. Ribeiro will now face North Narrabeen’s Davey Cathels in Quarterfinal 1.
“At the beginning of the heat I was a little bit nervous and didn’t get the good ones,” Ribeiro said. “Then I did that air and got a 9.50 which was lucky because Shaun (Jobert) is one of the best surfers in the event.”
Eziekel Lau (HAW) the big man from Hawaii ended Darmaputra Tonjo (IND), the Balinese giant killer’s deadly run in Round 4. Lau unleashed huge power gouges and a massive alley-oop to take the win and will now face Garrett Parkes (AUS) in Quarterfinal 2.
“I watched Darmaputra’s (Tonjo) Round 3 Heat closely and I noticed he was on all the best waves,” Lau said. “So my plan was to do that in my heat and it worked. I wanted to get a good start so I used my power surfing, then when I had some scores I threw up that Hail Mary air and I landed it.”
Conner Coffin (USA) took down last year’s Oakley World Pro Junior runner-up Dale Staples (ZAF) in a tight Round 4 battle. Coffin got the score required to take the lead with just a few minutes remaining to advance to the Quarterfinals.
“That was a really close heat,” Coffin said. “I wasn’t quite surfing my best and needed a little bit of luck. At the end I caught a good wave and Dale (Staples) fell on his last one, a couple things went my way and it was enough to get through.”
Peterson Crisanto (BRA) amassed the highest heat total of the men’s event so far – 18.00 (out of a possible 20). The young Brazilian attacked every section with style and flair, mixing carving turns with aerial antics, leaving jaws agape with the height and variety of his aerial repertoir.
“Canggu is my favourite wave in Bali,” Crisanto said. “The waves are so good for doing airs, so I just waited for the good ones and got some big scores. I’m staying right here so I surf this wave and practise all the time. I’m so stoked to be through to the Quarterfinals.”
Sarah Mason (NZL), the 16-year-old from New Zealand was the first woman to progress to the Quarterfinals after defeating Gabriela Leite (BRA) in Round 3 of the women’s event that was called on after the completion the Men’s Round 4.
“It’s so good to get out there and get some good waves all to yourself,” Mason said. “I love Canggu, the rights are really fun.”
The event was called off after the first 4 Heats of the Women’s Round 3. A call will be made at Canggu at 6:30am for a possible 7am start.
