SUPERTUBOS, Peniche/Portugal (Saturday, October 15, 2011) – A lay day has been called for the Rip Curl Pro Portugal with only small one foot (0.5 metre0 waves on offer at the primary site of Supertubos.

Event No. 9 of 11 on the 2011 ASP World Title season, the Rip Curl Pro Portugal will culminate the Dream Tour’s European leg and is expecting solid swell to begin filling in over the next several days.

“Small surf today as projected so we’ve called a lay day for competition,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge, said. “We are expected a significant swell and favorable winds to arrive in the next day or so and will be back tomorrow to assess the conditions.”

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7:30am to assess conditions for a possible 8am start.

Surfline, official forecasters for the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, are calling for a minor northwest swell mix will prevail today. A much stronger, longer period northwest swell will build in through the day on Sunday, looks strongest Monday and then will fade through the middle to second half of next week. At this point, wind conditions look generally favorable for Supertubos over the weekend and into at least the first part of next week.

Highlights from the Rip Curl Pro Portugal will be available via http://live.ripcurl.com

Dane Reynolds (USA), 26, has withdrawn from the Rip Curl Pro Portugal. His spot will be filled by first alternate Adam Melling (AUS), 26.

if Rafael Nadal withdrew from the US open it would be splashed all over every back page, and in some countries the front pages as well, yet when Dane Reynolds, arguably amongst the current top five hardest hitters of the surfing world, withdraws from a contest, it barely causes a ripple. I’m not really interested in all the ‘juicy’ detail, but he clearly isn’t injured any more (or is he??), so something else must be of issue. Why is it nigh on impossible to get any ‘news’ on the subject? When Jordy was out after Tahitii, I was trawling the internet to get news on his progress, whether or not we’d see him in the lineup in NY or Trestles etc etc.., nothing! I visited his own website, this site (asp), magicseaweed.com, surfline and anywhere else I thought there might be an update to be found.., nothing, well, nothing I didn’t already know if I was watching the webcast! If surfing is trying to step up a gear, it’s going to have to build a new gear box, we seem to be lacking 3rd, 4th and 5th gears completely. There have admittedly been huge forward steps taken, especially with webcasts etc, really exciting stuff, but where news is concerned, we really need to step up to the plate. C’mon asp, support your athletes AND your audience, we deserve better.

Understandable frustration Leif. Unfortunately, you know what we know. Dane withdrew for personal reasons. He’s stated that he will be attending the Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco and the Vans Hawaiian Triple Crown.
