ARPOADOR BEACH, Rio de Janeiro / Brazil (Wednesday, October 19, 2011) – Conditions did not improve at Arpoador Beach in Rio de Janeiro, for the ASP World 6-Star Quiksilver Brazil Open of Surfing presented by Arnette on Wednesday. After three calls by event organizers, competition was called day off at 11:30am local time. With the reduced window for the event, competition will begin Thursday at 8am local time under any weather conditions.

“The waves are breaking right along the shore break,” said Icaro Cavalheiro, Head Judge for the Quiksilver Brazil Open of Surfing. “There is a deep part of the sandbank between the point and the beach which doesn’t let the waves break properly. We’ve done everything we could to start off the competition but conditions haven’t improved. We had a meeting with the athletes and a day off was decided. The athletes will now have 20 minute heats in Round of 144 in whichever conditions are presented on Thursday.”

A total of 144 surfers from 19 countries are in Rio de Janeiro to the Quiksilver Brazil Open of Surfing which finishes off on Sunday. The majority of the athletes are from Brazil (101) with international representatives from Australia (7), United States (7), Hawaii (6), Peru (4), Venezuela (3), Spain (2), Reunion Island (2), Argentina (2), Japan (1), France (1), Portugal (1), Germany (1), South Africa (1), New Zealand (1), Mexico (1), Chile (1), Uruguay (1) and Panama (1). Each one is going after the U$145,000 in prize money and the 3,500 points going towards their ASP World Ranking.
