Arnette World Junior Completes Men’s Round 2 at Arpoador
Santiago Muniz (ARG) posted the highest scores on day 2 of Arnette World Junior competition.
ARPOADOR, Rio de Janeiro / Brazil (Tuesday, October 25, 2011) – The Inaugural Arnette World Junior presented by Quiksilver continued for the second consecutive day with clean one-to-three foot surf at Rio de Janeiro’s lefthand pointbreak of Arpoador to complete Round 2 of men’s competition.
Stop No. 2 of 3 on the ASP World Junior Tour, the Arnette World Junior saw several of the finest men’s under-21 surfing talent take to the water yesterday to complete Round 1, while women’s competition has yet to commence.
Santiago Muniz (BRA), younger brother of elite ASP World Tour campaigner Alejo Muniz, looked sharp in his Round 2 bout despite the smaller surf, locking in the day’s highest single-wave score of 8.50 (out of 10) en route to posting the day’s highest heat-total of 16.00 to leave his competitor Kan Watanabe (JPN) in a combination situation by the heat’s end.
“I’m really so happy,” Muniz said. “It’s my first World Junior and I got two good waves. I got the 8 and two 7s, so I’m so so happy. Rio de Janeiro is the best with these lefts, I love it here and I’ve surfed here a lot.”
Medi Veminardi (REU), ASP Europe Pro Junior Series Winner, battled through the tough conditions on offer in Round 2 due to the fading swell and relied of patient wave selection to take out his heat win over Slade Prestwich (ZAF).
“It’s a little bit smaller, but still really hard,” Veminardi said. “It’s usually a left, but since it’s smaller today it’s kind of closing-out, beachbreak. It’s tough because you have to find the right wave. That’s pretty much the main goal in the heats right now is to find a good wave, because if you don’t find a good one you’re not going to make it through the heat.”
Veminardi’s picky wave selection paid off, as he locked in to one of the day’s highest single-wave scores of 8.17 (out of 10), for a combination of three powerful turns to solidify the Round 2 victory.
“I was watching before my heat and the good waves looked to be breaking wider from the peak,” Veminardi said. “I just went on the outside and a good wave came. I did a good first turn and got a second one and had the money turn on the last one.”
Dane Zaun (USA), who is competing in his first ASP World Junior Tour event, built momentum throughout his heat to take a come-from-behind victory over European standout Vasco Ribeiro with a forehand assault on the lefthanders of Arpoador to advance through to Round 3.
“I had a score at the beginning, like a midrange 5, and I needed a score,” Zaun said. “Towards the end of the heat, I got a wave under his priority and then I had priority at the end of the heat and scored a 7, so I was stoked to close out the heat strong. I know that Vasco is a tough competitor. I’ve competed against him before and he rips, so I knew it was going to be a tough heat.”
Zaun is currently amidst his first trip to Brazil and is taking the time to emerge himself in the nation’s rich cultural history while he’s not competing.
“This is my first time to Brazil and I never imagined I’d come here for some reason,” Zaun said. “It’s been sick. It’s been one of the most fun trips. I haven’t done that much surfing, but I’ve been cruising around town and the food is good and I’m stoked. I definitely want to come back.”
