Historic SWATCH Girls Pro China Is On

[ 0 ] October 26, 2011 |

WANNING, Hainan Island/China (Wednesday, 26 October, 2011) - The SWATCH Girls Pro China hosted by Wanning is on now in 2 foot (1.5 meter) surf, and the swell is expected to build over the next few days. The event opened with an extravagant opening ceremony on the sands of Riyuewan Bay, Hainan Island yesterday. The locals are clearly excited to host this historic first ever ASP event in China with thousands attending the opening festivities which included singing, dancing and day-time fireworks.

The SWATCH Girls Pro China is the second of two events on the ASP Women’s World Longboard Tour and the event that will decide the 2011 ASP Women’s World Longboard Champion. The Title race is wide open, making this not only an historic event, but an exciting one too.

Lindsay Steinriede (USA) current ASP Women’s World Longboard Title ratings leader is excited and confident about the up and coming event.

“I feel prepared,” Steinriede said. “I’ve been working and training hard for this event. I’m feeling good and I’d like to seal the deal here in China! I was very surprised that they announced an event in China, I didn’t know there was surf here, but there is and I’m excited to be here.”

Kelia Moniz (HAW) one of the youngest competitors at the SWATCH Girls Pro China, at just 18-years-old she isn’t getting homesick here in China as Hainan Island reminds her of her home in Hawaii.

“Hainan is very similar to Hawaii,” Moniz said. “The people are welcoming, the weather and water is warm and it looks like we will get waves soon, so I feel at home and I’m excited to be here.”

Harley Ingleby (AUS), the SWATCH Girls Pro China Contest Director and 2009 ASP World Longboard Champion is excited about the favourable swell forecast.

“It looks like the swell arrived just in time for the event,” Ingleby said. “The swell is building today and looks like it will hang around for a few days. It’s not a very long event which is good because it will allow us to surf in the best conditions possible.”
