Big Scores on Short Day of Competition at Arnette ASP World Junior pres. by Quiksilver
ARPOADOR, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Thursday, October 27, 2011) – Arnette ASP World Junior presented by Quiksilver action continued in one-to-three foot surf at Arpoador beach today, as the early round standouts took to the water to complete the first half of Round 3 before event organizers called competition off for the afternoon.
Stop No. 2 of 3 on the 2011 ASP World Junior Tour, the Arnette ASP World Junior saw a big day for women’s competition yesterday to decide the event’s Quarterfinalists and the resurgence of men’s competition unfolded this morning and played host to some of the event’s highest scores.
Jack Freestone (AUS), 19, led the day’s high-scoring frenzy when he scalped the highest scores of Arnette ASP World Junior competition of a 9.53 (out of 10) for a massive air-reverse while posting a near-perfect 18.13 (out of 20) heat total to take a commanding Round 3 victory.
“I just took off on a right and all that was going through my head was punt, punt, punt,” Freestone said. “I got a really good section and boosted a nice little air-reverse. It feels good to get the high heat-total. I’ve been watching all of the heats and it seems like all of the scores have been 15-points and above. I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to lift my game if I want to make the Final,’ so I’m really happy about the heat.”
Kiron Jabour (HAW), 20, was raised on Oahu’s North Shore, but the Brazilian-born surfer still maintains close ties to his South American roots and is enjoying the time spent in his second home.
“I live in Hawaii, but I come here a lot,” Jabour said. “I was born here and my whole family is here. It’s like my second home. I know everyone because of my parents and everyone is so nice to me. I love it here.”
Jabour navigated through the smaller conditions on offer at Arpoador by sticking to his game-plan of hunting down the lefts while utilizing careful priority selection to take another strong heat victory while advancing through to Round 4.
“I’ve surfed Rio a fair bit, I’ve struggled a little in the smaller conditions, but I’m making my heats, so I’m happy,” Jabour said. “I knew that kid Luan (Carvalho) was good with his frontside airs because I watched his heats, but I just stuck to my plan of catching the lefts. I got an 8 on one of those lefts and then got a 6 on a right. Luckily I kept him off of one of those rights, because he could have got the score.”
Filipe Toledo (BRA), 16, was another standout to belt a top score today and reveled in the wedgy conditions to earn a 9.27 (out of 10) for several power gouges while defeating European standout Medi Veminardi (REU) 20, in Round 3.
“I got a good wave when I started the heat,” Toledo said. “I had a few good turns and got the 9.27 to start that heat, so I’m stoked and I’m happy to move through to Round 4.”
Event organizers at the Arnette ASP World Junior presented by Quiksilver will reconvene at 7am local time for a possible 7:30am restart to competition.
