Men’s Quarterfinalists Decided at Arnette ASP World Junior

PRAIA DO DIABO, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Tuesday, November 1, 2011) – The Arnette ASP World Junior presented by Quiksilver returned to the backup venue of Praia Do Diabo and completed men’s Round 4 action in tricky one-to-two foot (.5 metre) waves to decide the event’s Quarterfinalists.

Stop No. 2 of 3 on the 2011 ASP World Junior Tour, the Arnette ASP World Junior presented by Quiksilver saw Leila Hurst (HAW) clinch the women’s event and a men’s champion will be crowned tomorrow, on the final day of the waiting period.

Italo Ferreira (BRA) locked in to the wedgy lefts on offer today at Praia Do Diabo and launched the highest single-wave score of the day, a near-perfect 9.63 (out of 10) for a massive frontside air to top Hawaiian talent Keanu Asing (HAW) to advance through to the Quarterfinals.

“I’m really confident and focused and trying to do my best,” Ferreria said. “I feel really good and I know everyone is pushing for me to get a big result here in Brazil. Last night I surfed out here and surfed the lefts. When I came down this morning I knew it was the same and I just did the same as my surf last night because the rights were not that good.”

Garrett Parkes (AUS) won his Round 4 heat via a last-minute ride and despite the challenging conditions at the Arnette ASP World Junior, the young Australian is happy to advance through to the final day of competition.

“The conditions are terrible and it’s too bad that it has to come down to this,” Parkes said. “We’re just dealing with it and trying to get through heats. It was a shocker heat and it’s frustrating.”

Filipe Toledo (BRA), who has emerged as a promising young Brazilian on the global stage over the last year, was dominant once again today and is eying the 2011 Arnette ASP World Junior Title.

“It’s pretty good to be competing here at my home break,” Toledo said. “For sure I’d like to win here and it’s really good for the country to have this event.”

Arnette ASP World Junior competition will recommence tomorrow morning and crown a men’s champion by day’s end. For all of the LIVE action log on to www.brasilopenofsurfing.com.br
