Caio Ibelli Tops Jack Freestone To Win Arnette ASP World Junior

Caio Ibelli is now a fruntrunner for the ASP World Junior Title, will he win in Australia?

PRAIA DO DIABO, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Wednesday, November 2, 2011) – Caio Ibelli (BRA) has defeated defending ASP World Junior Champion Jack Freestone (AUS) to win the Arnette ASP World Junior presented by Quiksilver in two-to-three foot waves at the backup venue of Praia Do Diabo on an action packed final day of competition.

Ibelli remained consistent on the final day of competition, posting three consecutive 16 point heat totals and was the only surfer who was able to put a stop to Freestone’s rampage to take the win. The talented Brazilian opened his Final with a solid score and backed the ride up with an 8.60 (out of 10), which proved enough to clinch the Arnette ASP World Junior Title.

I’m feeling really good, this is the best day of my life and I’ve been training a lot,” Ibelli said. “I got an 8.6, and built confidence and just tried my best. I’m so happy that I won this event. I love competing at home and I was trying to make the final a year ago in Narrabeen, so I was stoked to make the final. Jack was surfing really good, he got the 10 today and I just stuck with my strategy.”

Ibelli, who finished equal 5th at the opening ASP World Junior event in Bali, now vaults up the rankings and is in excellent position to take the final event of the season in Australia.

Freestone appeared to be unstoppable on the final day of competition, scoring the event’s two highest single-wave scores of a perfect 10 and a 9.70 (both out of 10) in his Quarterfinals matchup before blasting 16.27 out of 20 in the Semifinals but was unable to surpass Ibelli for the win.

“I just took off and saw it had a really nice ramp,” Freestone said after his Quarterfinals heat. “I creased my board in the process of it, I’m surprised I didn’t break it.”
