Will the Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco still crown the 2011 ASP World Champion?

Will the Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco still crown the 2011 ASP World Champion?

OCEAN BEACH, San Francisco/California (Friday, November 4, 2011) – The ASP has admitted that, due to a calculation error within its rankings’ system, the 2011 ASP World Title has yet to be officially decided and that Kelly Slater (USA), 39, was prematurely awarded his 11th ASP World Title on Wednesday.

“Our rankings’ system is designed to split tie-breaks based off of seed points,” Renato Hickel, ASP World Tour Manager, said. “Kelly (Slater) and Owen (Wright) tied at best nine of 11 results, so we went to best eight of 11 results and the system gave it to Kelly based off his higher seed position. We were operating under that assumption and created the ASP World Title scenarios based off of that. This was a mistake. In the end, we’re responsible for this and should be held accountable. We apologize to our fans, the surfers and to Owen and Kelly.”

Moving forward, Slater must win one more heat, either at the Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco or at the following event at Pipeline in Hawaii to confirm his 2011 ASP World Title. For Wright to remain in the hunt, he must win both the Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco and the following event at Pipeline in Hawaii.

REVISED 2011 ASP WORLD TITLE SCENARIOS:
- If Kelly wins either Round 4 or 5 (one more heat win) in San Francisco, he will confirm his 2011 ASP World Title.
- If Kelly fails to win another heat in San Francisco, Owen must win this event to send the 2011 ASP World Title race to Hawaii.
- If the race goes to Hawaii, Kelly must advance out of one heat to confirm his 2011 ASP World Title. If Kelly fails to advance through a heat at Pipeline, Owen must also win this event to stay in the 2011 ASP World Title Race.
- If Kelly fails to advance out of another heat this season, and Owen wins in San Francisco and Pipeline, the two will tie at best of nine, eight, seven, etc. events, and the 2011 ASP World Title will be decided in a “Surf Off”.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7:30am to assess conditions for a possible 8am start.

The Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco, Stop No. 10 of 11 on the 2011 ASP World Title Series, will be broadcast live on Fuel TV, Livestream.com and live.ripcurl.com

Surfline, official forecasters for the Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco, are calling New NW swell will build through the day on Friday and be strongest in the afternoon, with solidly overhead surf. Those waves fade throughout Saturday, although the morning will still be fairly solid. Our next swell will move in over Sunday afternoon and will be strongest Monday and will be a little smaller than the Friday afternoon swell. Variable onshore wind will prevail over the next few days, although there will be periods of light wind and relatively clean conditions.

No Owen Wright in Sunset, Entry closed, Event full

  2. Sea says:

“@kellyslater: @onphyr If I get 9th here, 13th or less at pipe and @RealOwenWright wins both and we drop 2 results we’re dead tied both carrying a 13th.”. …..How does this equate to “one heat” in HI ?…13th or less at Pipe = tied ….sooooo Kelly needs a 9th or better at Pipe to win …. 9th = two heats … Assuming OW wins both. ASP ….YOU STILL HAVE IT WRONG !!

  3. Jamie Mitchell says:

How’s all the self-righteous retards jumping on the hate wagon?

As far as I can tell, this was a mistake by one guy from ASP and I’m pretty sure he regrets it. If you’ve never screwed up in your life then by all means, criticise the shit out of him for not being perfect like you.

Otherwise, stop your whining you monotonous little bitches. Kelly is still going to win.

    1. Glenn Gould says:

Hey Jamie, this is America and everyone has a right to their own opinion. Personal attacks and name calling just makes you look juvenile.

    2. Jamie Mitchell says:

Hey Glen, did you know that other countries besides America are able to use the internet? Cool huh?

  4. JohnO says:

ASP should at least admit that they didn´t even identify the error but that Kelly himself (from a blog comment (Mark)) figured out himself.

very weak performance from the ASP…

“…The following day, Slater was perusing Internet accounts of his triumph when he came across an interesting observation in the Comments section. A reader named Mark noted that, by his calculations, Slater still hadn’t qualified for the title, that world No. 2 Owen Wright still had a chance.

This was the moment of truth. Slater could have blown off the comment as folly, and nobody would have been the wiser. The title would be his, then and forever. But that’s not Slater. The remark sparked his curiosity, and he did the math himself, over and over again. Presto — that guy named Mark was correct.

“Kelly immediately began contacting people about this thing,” his agent, Terry Hardy, told the Chronicle (Slater made himself unavailable for comment). “He wasn’t going to be able to live with himself if he won the title unfairly. He’s going, ‘We gotta call the ASP and let ‘em know.’

“At first, they weren’t ready to believe Kelly,” said Hardy. “They were certain they had it right. But eventually, they realized they’d made the biggest mistake of their lives.”

    …” (http://blog.sfgate.com/threedotblog/2011/11/04/hold-on-kelly-slater-didnt-win/)

  5. John says:

    In Linux it wouldn’t happened

  6. Loz says:

I think it was quite courageous of the ASP to go ahead and admit the error. Lets face it, the chances of Kelly not winning another heat this year are quite remote. Particularly given his form and his ability in Hawaii. They could have let it slip through to the keeper, and no one would have known the difference. At this stage it shows that they are honest and they would know they are going to get a pasting in the press.

Bring on 2012, and lets hope someone steps up like Owen has done this year and at least challenges Kelly. Cant be a great look for the youth of surfing when you cant roll a 40 year old man.

  7. joe32blow says:

First the ASP does this crazy mid year cut

Then it holds 6 contests at fickle beach breaks — 3 of em NY, SF, and Brazil are second rate fickle beach breaks.

Then it bans Bobby for speaking his mind

Then it fines Dane $25k for a no show

Then it holds the Grom search the day after the port of Oakland is shut down due to massive civil unrest and completely ignores it while many people walk out in solidarity.

Then it strips Kelly of number 11.

Clearly the ASP is a bunch of out of touch Hooray Henrys

  8. Bill Saunders says:

So its pretty simple. Kelly has to lose all of his heats and Owen has to win all of his all the way through the Pipe Masters. And then Owen still has to beat Kelly in a surf off.

Get over your outrage and move on!

    1. Bill Saunders says:

Not saying it won’t happen, but if it does just enjoy the sport and remember this season. After all, its just surfing and there will be more waves for all of us tomorrow.

  9. will says:

AAHHH, that is why the microphone was not working properly on stage for the Kelly presentation that turned out to be a shambles and an joke in itself…someone behind the scenes had worked out it was a mistake and was trying to shut it down by stopping it going out on web land…bit far fetched…maybe not as crazy as it seems.

One can only feel sorry for Kelly for without him the tour is just a shadow of media event if ASP do not re visit their personell and structure over this then why in hell would Kelly bother being made the king clown of what can only be described as a old and tired circus and I am sure owen or any one of the other future title contenders must be really questioning what lies ahead if no serious re birthing of the ASP comes out of this. It is far more that a simple screw out or regrettable mistake, it is an unmitigated disaster for the sport of Pro Surfing run by jobs for the boys gang controlled by the big buck top five/six surf companies…lets’ face it, that is who is paying the ASP bills and running the events

  10. Monty says:

    Whoa,
That has got to be one of the biggest gafs ever for a professional sport!
Have to say should have seen it coming when they could not even pull off the trophy ceremony without messed up mic audio and delays.
Maybe someone is sabotaging the system to get Kelly to quit in disgust! Want the full story, did the person in charge of the figuring come out and admitt fault or did they get called out by someone else. Ridiculous situation…

  11. Geoge Orwell says:

    A = association of
    S = SUCKERS
    P = professionals

  12. Ryan says:

Morons… What an unprofessional, disrespectful, botched job at KEEPING SCORE! If it your job to crown a title, have a little sense of purpose and get it right. As a surfer, am embarrassed for you ASP.

  13. maningreysuit says:

Holy crap, this is freakn hilarious, world wide press releases on the news here in Australia “Ke11y wins world title then he doesn’t”, his next heat is against 2 very dangerous surfers so his title is not safe yet thats for sure, and i am pretty sure not much rattles Ke11ys chains but this just may give him the reason he needs to retire from a messed up tour. How embarrassing for Ke11y he relies on the ASP to do their job and get things right. Huge amount of $$$$ just got thrown down the drain. Was it human error or computer error?

  14. TAB Textor Florida says:

Kelly Slater, The Real Shock. Here goes…In 2011 taking 7 of 9 highest Results when dropping the low per ASP ? 1+ 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 5 + 5 = 17/7 = 2.42857 Avg. Owen Wright ? 1 + 2 + 2 + 5 + 5 + 9 + 13 = 37/7 = 5.28571 Avg. Know what this means? 5.28571 Owen (#2) /// 2.42857 Kelly (#1) = 2.17647. Don’t Understand ? Here goes, Today In 2011 Kelly Slater is 218 % Better than the 2nd Best Surfer in th…e World. Given the weight and consistency and the statistical probability that Slater’s Average could go down between San Francisco and Pipeline, the Multiplicative Life Leverage Scale (It’s Complicated) summarized suggests more than + – 3 Titles X 300% Better than the best ever or, Here goes. 1,000 times better than the next best surfer in History (Substitute Your Favorite). Don’t be Dumb on questioning these Calculations fumbling to Weigh in any surfer having to beat him between 1ST Peak Sebastian Inlet to Waimea Bay (The Eddie).

  15. Rick Kane says:

New York, San Francisco, Surf Off, it’s the full on 80s surf whoring. Great job ASP making the sport of surfing look legitimate while not being able to add. Guess home schooling wasn’t the best option after all. Dream tour… what a joke.

  16. gary ross says:

The purse for the 2012 race just got a bit richer… it seems a new corporate sponsor Southwest Airlines is jumping in and will be expanding its ” Want to Get Away” champaign somewhere in San Francisco !

  17. Nuno says:

What a bunch of amateurs!! Such a mistake at this level shows the type of people currently managing the Tour. Shame on you

  18. Ben says:

    what !! calculation error ??! i’m sure they use a PC :)

  19. Peter says:

Oh no, don’t tell me we will have Bobby back crying like a 4 year old about the ASP.

  20. Samuel says:

    What is a Surf Off??

  21. ANGIE says:

come on you crowned him, how can u make a mistake like that, how many people are working on this, do the maths and get it right get someone else to check, btw check it 5 times if u need to but that is so unfair for ke11y and owen. I hope kelly wins his next heat. GO KE11Y do it again !!!!!

  22. gary ross says:

OK now that he has been crowned and now uncrowned and if he is crowned again…….by my count that is number 12. And now even more amazing than any of us thought possible ( even for kelly). Only ke12y could have pulled this one off.

    So GO KE12Y !

  23. fieldy says:

    1 job 2 do & they f**ked it up!!

  24. vivi says:

What does a surf off mean? Is it an extra heat between Owen and Slater to crown the World Champion? It is unlikely to happen, but would be so exciting !!

  25. Tim says:

Maybe now the judges can give Dan Ross the scores he should have gotten if so much media wasn’t connected to that heat.
This tour is getting worse to follow every year.

  26. Jesús Munguira says:

So, give Owen a wildcard to Sunset, we to want see him there. Then, if happens all those rarely things, perhaps we can whatch “The surf off of the century”

  27. Timoteo says:

ALSO NOW SLATER IS NOT GOING TO WIN IN OFFSHORE, SUNNY, FUN SURF but in CLOUDY WINDY WIND CHOP OH MY GOD. you should have a press release saying who GOT FIRED for this. pathetic

  28. Timoteo says:

grand job just stellar…. blew a really special event in surfing history.

  29. Jesús Munguira says:

Owen can’t win in attendance to art 14.2 of the ASPRULEBOOK:
“14.02 During each Surfing Season, World Tour Surfers must compete in at
    least 2 Prime events…
14.03 If a Surfer fails to comply with Article 14.02, their lowest result counting
towards their ASP World Title Race [Refer to Article 12] and their ASP
World Ranking [Refer to Article 6.03] will be substituted with a zero”
Owen compete in Margaret River only, and not seeded in Sunset!!

  30. Andreas says:

    Kooks!!!

  31. geoff says:

So there’s a chance he could win it all on 11.11.11…. leave it to Kelly….

  32. BLUMPKINFORCE says:

I hope that computer gets fired.

  33. Rich says:

When or if, Kelly does win one more heat that would make him 22x world champ…right?
Using ASP math: winning his 11th world title for the second time : 11 x 2 =22. Just saying ASP MATH! Not the way to make pro surfing a legit sport. Thought this time it may make the cover of S.I….Still might but for the wrong reason!

  34. dave says:

so whose head rolls for this, what a totally easy mistake to avoid. it is Simple mistake than anyone who double checked their work would have picked up. Disgraceful and shameful you have made sport look silly to the world

  35. Sea says:

Kelly currently has a 13 in S.F., he needs a 9. If Owen wins the last two events, and Kelly gets a 13 in S.F. doesn’t Kelly need at least a 9 in Hawaii ?

    1. ASP International says:

Kelly currently has a 9th in SF. He needs a 5th to confirm the 2011 ASP World Title.

    2. monte@HBCA. says:

ASP to Kelly “Sorry mate we need that crown back”. You need to do 2 more
360′s and a couple of barrel roles and we will give it back”. What a screwup!

    3. Sea says:

Oh right, he has a 9… just testing ‘ya…. Good thing you guys are on top of the points counting… oh wait.

    4. macdaddy says:

@ASP International: if he has a 9th in San Fran but he loses here then wouldn’t he need better than a 13th in Pipe to beat Owen, otherwise that would still be tied surely

  36. Antoine says:

Very, very unprofessional. What a fail. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves.

  37. Surfoakland says:

Can you imagine what a stir this would cause if it were the World Series, Superbowl, Wimbledon, World Cup, Rugby World Cup, etc. I’m sure the ASP will have all their i’s dotted and t’s crossed in the future!
This screw-up does however give me another chance to see Slater crowned.

  38. Diffusion says:

If Owen goes on to win, this would have to go down as one of the world’s biggest backfires EVER!! Will Kelly win 11 ‘twice’ in the one year?! Will there be another coronation ceremony or should we just leave it as a ‘been there, done that’ if Kelly does officially win?! :D Ridic

    1. Karlos says:

It’s highly unlikely that Ke11y wont win a heat either in SF or Pipeline.

  39. Clive Maasch says:

Great publicity stunt!! Positive or negative Kelly, Quiksilver, ASP …. all get media coverage. Nail-biting stuff … I wonder if Kelly will retain the 2011 title?? LOL

  40. Ronan says:

ASP I have never critized any of our decisions, even though I didn’t like so much your new ranking system (with a title race scammed by this ridiculous cut) here I have to concede that you did very wrong!!
How could you pretend you are a trustable sports organization arguing for olympics participation after such a mistake?
Just think twice about that: would this mistake occur with the simple double leagues system (WQS for underdogs struggling for a seat to a one-year dream tour not yet in the title race VS WCT for top 45 surfers on the planet, having 10 or 11 events to decide who is best)???
Apologize and get back to good things please or give up your seat to sensible people!

  41. Joao says:

@Toby, If the ASP was run y english people they would do thee mistakes everyday and would only allow english surfers to win heats.

  42. GARDEL says:

    Comedy !!!!

  43. Willie says:

What I dont understand if there tied! Why should kelly just win a heat to become ASP World Champion and Owen need to win the whole 2 contest to become ASP World Champion! Can somebody explain this im very confused! :D

  44. Pacific Ocean says:

I was wondering how the “Kelly 11″ LOGO (ICON)got produced so quickly.

  45. Toby Abbs (England) says:

As we say in the UK “laughing all the way to the bank”. What a cock-up…… The ASP should be run by the English, least we would have fair scoring for surfers in their heats and not just to Slater because he is a previous world champ so we must give him title no# 11

  46. Joe says:

Perfect example of why us regular surf fans can’t make sense of the title race and rankings. If you can’t get it right, how are we supposed to even figure it out?! Keep it simple!

  47. Joe says:

    Rea11y?!

  48. Tomas says:

    Ridiculous

  49. Mark Gunson says:

    Wow. Major fail…. Very unprofessional.

  50. andrew says:

With 0 pts at JBAY they won’t tie. Owen would be champ. C’mon ASP…

    1. ASP International says:

For ASP World Title results, countbacks go best 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1. We don’t go to 10 and 11. In the scenarios outlined above, if Owen wins both events and Kelly doesn’t win another heat, then they both tie at best 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1. Then there will be a “Surf Off”

    2. John says:

Actually, ASP International, I still think you guys don’t have it right. Owen has only been in one Prime event this year to this point. According to your 14.02 and 14.03 rules here, he needs to enter another one or else only his best 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 count, and Kelly would win without needing another heat: http://www.aspworldtour.com/pdf/asprulebook.pdf

Is Owen slated to be in the only remaining Prime event this year, the Sunset contest Nov 25 – Dec 6?
