SAN FRANCISCO, California/USA (Sunday, November 6, 2011) – After a week that will not soon be forgotten by the surfing world, Kelly Slater (USA), 39, officially clinched the 2011 ASP World Title today, besting South American young guns Gabriel Medina (BRA), 17, and Miguel Pupo (BRA), 19, in Round 4 of the Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco. Following a second impromptu ceremony spawned by Slater’s legions of fans at Ocean Beach, ASP CEO Brodie Carr and Tour Manager Renato Hickel find a quiet moment to apologize to Kelly for the week’s drama, congratulate him on his well-deserved win and officially award him the 2011 ASP World Title Trophy. Understated and classy.

Congratulations to Kelly.

  1. Rob Diamond says:

Over scored? Not even close. Kelly Slater is the best surfer of all time. End of story. He continually crushes new school and power surfers alike. He has heart, work ethic, and skill matched by no other which is a deadly combination for his competitors.

  2. Thee Srfnff says:

Kelly simply out-surfed the Brazilian boys. Kelly chose to rip on the biggest, meanest, most challenging waves he could find. In the meantime, the Brazilians surfed their game, taking the smaller waves and successfully performing their tricks and acrobatics. Kelly beat them by putting on a masterful display of power surfing that defines the essence of the sport…not just contest surfing, but “real”, hardcore surfing. He is the Champ, and we’re gonna miss him.

    • Gui says:

how about now?! still think like that about Medina?! he beat Kelly with no acrobatics…just pure strong surf!

  3. ASS PEE says:

    ….get it together guys !!!

  4. Gil says:

Kelly knows he lost to medina and pupo …he always gets pushed by the judges and ovescored …
if the asp keep acting like that they will lose a lot of fans..

    • FORREST says:

KELLLY ALWAYS DOES GET WAY OVER SCORED DAN ROSS SURFED WAYY BETTER THAN HIM IN THE THIRD ROUND?!?!! AND MADINA
and at trestles he got an 8 for doing three solid carves (im not saying not very good surfing just compared to shii going down that day not deserving of an 8)

  5. Ricardo says:

Kelly was overscored again. He got 9 in a crappy wave!! Shame on judges!!

  6. Stephen says:

Just a side bar but how about that last wave as time expired? Kelly was so deep in the tubing shore break the cameras had left him for flotsam. He emerges from the foam, still on his board, and the crowd goes nuts. If Kelly had needed that wave score to win the round it would have scored 9.5 or higher. That is the stuff legends are made of.

  7. Pete WestOz says:

Great barrel from Kelly in that heat. Amazing…..

Congratulations to Kelly Slater for a amazing year and some amazing surfing.

New York -Taj heat still goes down as one to remember.

  8. S.M.C says:

  11. Albert says:
