John Florence Preps for Vans Triple Crown
LOS ANGELES, California/USA (Friday, November 18, 2011) – John Florence (HAW), 18, has established himself as arguably the best Pipeline surfer in the world well before the end of his teens. After joining the ASP Top 34 at the midyear rotation, the young Hawaiian Prodigy has proven himself in everything high-performance waves at Lowers to the powerful barrels of Peniche and now that the waiting period for the ASP Specialty Vans Triple Crown has kicked off, ESPN caught up with Florence to get his thoughts on his first few events on the ASP World Tour and where his head was at entering the prestigious events held at his house. ESPN: So, you’re on tour now. Is it everything you’ve ever dreamed?
Florence: It’s definitely different than what I expected from the time I was little. It’s hard. You have to go into every event with 100 percent confidence and just surf your best because everyone there is there to win and no one is going to give you the heat. You have to win by a mile to really make a heat.
The last interview we did was in your tree house. A lot has changed since then. What has been the hardest part of adjusting to the tour, in and out of the water?
Yeah, ever since I got on the tour my schedule has been crazy. Going to contests back to back, World Tour and Primes, I’ve noticed a lot more things with my surfing that could be improved for my heats to improve. Staying focused throughout all of those events for months at a time is hard to adjust to, but definitely fun.

hopefully he wont get let down or quit because of the illegitimate system and silly judging system.
A brilliant surfer. Unlimited potential. But: needs to study Andy Irons as an example of radical moves with impeccable style. The straight arm hang doesn’t look cool. Looks like Tyler Wright, who looks neanderthal with a double straight arm hang. Knuckle dragging is cool? Not. It’s a flaw that needs to be evolved out of.
