Quiksilver Pro New York Cancelled for 2012

The 2011 Quiksilver Pro New York scored excellent waves, but unfortunately will not be back in 2012.
LONG BEACH, New York/USA (Friday, December 16, 2011) – Quiksilver and the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) today announced that the Quiksilver Pro New York will not return to the East Coast of the United States as a stop on the 2012 ASP World Title Series. The 2011 Quiksilver Pro New York marked the 6th of 11 events on the elite ASP World Title Series.
“The 2011 Quiksilver Pro New York event was a huge success for the surfers and fans with great conditions and incredible support from New Yorkers.” says Rob Colby, President of Quiksilver Americas. “Quiksilver is still very much committed to the ASP and the professional surfing tour in 2012 with the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast (Australia) and the Quiksilver Pro France.”
“It is unfortunate that we announce the cancellation of the 2012 Quiksilver Pro New York,” Dave Prodan, ASP International spokesman, said. “The 2011 installment was a fantastic event with excellent waves, tremendous local support and some of the best surfing we enjoyed all season. That said, we understand the factors leading to Quiksilver’s withdrawal of the New York event from the 2012 schedule. We appreciate Quiksilver’s continued support of the world’s best surfers with the Australian and European elite level events in 2012.”

Quik probably pulled bc LB got greedy. Been living & surfing in LB for 9 yrs. The town officials/cops live by their own set of rules & are as corrupt as the mob. LB probably thought they could milk more money from Quik being that it was a huge success last year, got a ton of mainstream coverage. Sucks for us New Yorkers, but kudos to Quik for not succumbing. Montauk would be better anyway.
I was agree with the Montauk thing! it would be so fun if they had a competition there. but oh well .. maybe in the future
I felt lucky to see one day of the 2011 NY event. Really nothing like it to see it in person. I hope they will work out any differences or figure out the finances because it seems like long term it could really pay off – I mean it was located just outside of NYC – one of the hugest media markets in the world. As far as the waves – I missed seeing the French contest but the waves were better than Trestles and as good or better than San Francisco. I’m not trying to say NY has better waves all the time but compared to those two other events NY held it’s own and then some.
yo bring it to new zealand. rags or Gissy – consistant and world class.
G land would be 1st choice however.
@mjo,the surfing is always great slater medina etc r great surfers, surfing in general is always progressing but the tour is way behind with how to qualify an old system and very low tech with how the judging is.There gotta come up with the official scores of each heat after the heats r finished even if it takes half an hr.The triple crown was great but i dont get why sunset is not on the tour its the 1 wave which should be on the tour, but of course alot of the scores coming out were bad, like yr buddy slater against the triple crown winner, maybe slater did win that heat but there just playing around with numbers each heat, its really bad.
great stuff quiksilver , now billabong please cancel brazil and organise 2 replacement events in locations worthy of the world tour eg, G LAND and porto escondido
I agree and so do millions others
All disappointed with the cancellation of this great event. hopefully next year’s event could be held longer.
So if it’s about Long Beach being a pain why not have it some place else in NY? Like Ditch Plains? plus the waves are nice there.
@Gab,i try to watch every heat on the tour i always love the surfing, but i get so frustrated at the dumb old boring scoring system, its only in hawaii 2011 that sum ozzie guy banged up the idea of putting a score board so the competitors and the viewers can see the scores, wow wow,and it doesnt really make much difference as the judges even by reviewing replays still pull out official Wrong scores during each heat.Yes there awarding big moves etc but there so many examples of bad scores being pulled out,as it only takes one heat win to give you momentum to win a world title, but its always,Oh you win sum you lose sum,it doesnt need to be like that, its a massive let down.Bring the judging system into the future, bring the tour into the future and you will have the best freesurfers too wanting to compete on it,but the system is to stringent and boring, the sport will become more mainstream and interesting by restructuring the old dumb system.
@mjo um well the tour really hasnt progressed much in terms of how the system is with judging and how the tour can be inviting for the best surfers to want to compete on the tour, its definately good for slater if the tour doesnt progress much as the judges just hand him heat after heat, slater is the greatest surfer who has ever competed on the world surfing tour.If i had a billion dollars id completely change the style of the tour and he can keep that claim.
Still don’t agree. Slater was very instrumental in getting the event to NY BTW. His involvement has way more to do than just surf heats. Also, you saw many upstarts this last year that just blew us away with their talent. Medina would be just one example. Not to mention what happened with the Triple crown.
Additionally, I do agree there is always room for improvement on scoring heats and the system. There will always be that fact that the ASP will evolve throughout the years. Money is the key issue however.
People need to remember its a half half deal…we want the event to be accessible so we can witness and experience them live…but USA isn’t blessed with world class waves. So the other half is putting this event in a going off world class wave where most people following the sport can’t be there… I think it’s about the surfers and the sport not about our entertainment…if that were the case why don’t they build big wave pool stadiums and market it like baseball??? Because that’s not surfing come on people lets forget about not being able to attend events and instead think of the successful path of the tour going to waves that wud hav us going nuts!
good points, yes just improve the whole system bring it into the future change the old judging system hold the events in dream waves, you dont need big crowds you just need to make the events imaginative with the best surfers there.Surfing i think is the 1 sport where it could be made the most entertaining sport to watch, even for people who dont surf, but all you got is guys being thrown out in heats and bogus scores being announced via a loud speaker etc tour really hasnt progressed much with how the system is,and now they seem to want to go back to small beachies with big audiences.
I read all this I’m a kook love watchin the surfin wherever it is!
It is funny how many experts can’t even spell the company name – Quiksilver and not QuiCKsilver…
Sorry my bad. Don’t really pay attention to logos or corporate slogans. Just like to surf. Will clean up my act for you though.
ASP:
What are the clear advantages of holding a WT contest at a Rio beach break then say Keramas? I don’t understand some of the Dream Tour locations. What kind of return does the organizer expect to make, aren’t most of the spectators online these days? Surely you can’t expect to sell t-shirts on the beach for a profit.
Whats the angle on urban beach breaks over a high performance skate parks (keramas)?
Hey Jass,
Since its inception, the concept of the Dream Tour has been based on an 80/20 split. The focus of 80% of the waves should be dedicated to the very best waves on the planet and in exotic locales. The other 20% would be dedicated to quality waves in more populated areas in order to grow the sport. Rio falls into the latter. It is also one of our highest grossing events in terms of webcast audience. I’m confident the ASP would be 100% supportive of an event at Keramas, but a sponsor/licensee would have to come to the organization with a proposal first.
please asp get rid of the brazil event or move it somewhere with good waves in south america . we all know that you moved the event to the start of the calendar to force the pros to come because most don’t like going there . then to make it worse the dodgy judging with owen and poo man claimer dezouza . please make this adream tour again bring back G land .
ASP and Quicksilver must know Kelly is retiring?
yes probably ,and i hope he does as now kelly can say is the greatest and now make his money somewhere else and now they can change the whole system and judging system and have a fresh start.
Antman, don’t really agree. I love watching Kelly surf and he has done so much for the sport. However, I do think there are some scoring discrepancies when he is in a heat. With that said the dude shreds and he has been one of the greatest voices for the sport. Some people who want less people out in the line up may cringe at that. Though, it is the world we live in and at least if you can you can make bank surfing. Also a part of professional surfing Slater influenced.
Additionally, he has helped define a lot of the rules and approaches to competitive surfing. In my opinion it is for the better. When he retires I will miss the guy.
As a local I understand why they wouldn’t come back. The city government was corrupted as shit and they screwed them last minute using the hurricane as a scapegoat, how convenient! they lost out on a lot of money and i’m sure that their insurance carrier claims us as unreliable now there for not supporting them coming back. I hope you guys fill the spot with a sick location and maybe in the future return to us locals who enjoyed that week more then you can imagine!
please, take this “contest” and all of its “professionals” as far away from the OBX and the east coast as possible.
Why?
Well, Quiksilver requested a withdrawal from the schedule. They were later quoted as citing financial reasons for the withdrawal.
Quicksilver should try Montauk and they may not have to deal with ridiculous politicians and the waves out there can get overhead with right weather
Bobby Martinez caused Quicksiler to pull out of the new york stop on the tour, ASP go back to the old format and start back up what was working for so long long.
Newport Beach Local.
back to the old format for sure, Martinez is a kook.
More to do with money, all surf companies are suffering.
As for Bobby, biggest noob in the history of pro surfing.
Long Beach is bankrupt! Last month the day after the elections we (residents) find out that there is not even enough money to pay our police force the last pay check of 2011. The (excuse) for a hotel that accomodated (loosest possible definition) visiting surfers and staff is filing for bankruptcy. Basically, EVERYTHING that sucks about NY sucks about LB but seems MUCH worse because we are such a small community. When you get screwed by a politician, you get screwed by your neighbor. Sad.
Its a shame. For everyone who’s hating on the EC right now, I’ve sat through web cast of just as much 3 foot slop at Lowers, J-Bay, Bells, Pipe, and everywhere else that the contests are held. The EC blows up in September just like every other spot does at appropriate time. Its a real shame that it won’t get its time in the spot light, especially since Long Island isn’t the best spot over here.
Insurance paid the bands and all the other crap so put this on Quik 100%
This is really disappointing. I’ve lived in LB my entire life and I missed the contest this year due to being in NC and not being able to leave after Irene rolled through. I was really banking on it coming back this year so I could experience it first hand like the tens of thousands of people that got to be there this year.
I never once heard a bad thing about the contest from anybody I talked to. It’s still being talked about today. It was a real shame that Irene had to roll through and complicate things. From what I know, it was great for our city.
Anybody who is saying that this is a good thing that the Pro isn’t coming back next year is out of their mind. You really think because a Pro contest is being held here that tons of people will start flocking to LB to surf? You gotta be kidding me. First of all, our surf is so inconsistent that most people would never put their money into a trip to LB because of the high probability that there will be no swell. Second, we have 108 miles of beach people, so complaining about the breaks becoming more crowded is just an absurd statement. Yes, LB gets crowded in the summer, but once the water gets cold the crowds thin out dramatically. 7 of the 12 months of the year we are basically covered head to toe in neoprene, most people aren’t going to rush to get to LB to surf in 20 lbs of rubber. Believe me, living in NC people complain about 52 degree water temps..forget about when the water gets to the mid 30s on LI.
About bringing the contest to OBX: I’m pretty positive ( from what my friends who live there have told me ), unless you plan on going to nags head/KDH or ocracoke by ferry, Rodanthe and points south are basically off limits because of the damage from Irene. There are still plenty of holes in the road and new inlets that have not been fixed because the NC Board of Governors has not allocated funds for fixing NC Highway 12. Good luck getting thousands of people the OBX by boat and ferry. I do agree it would be great for the local community, but it’s just not feasible.
its very good that it will not be held agaian as it will probably be 1 foot shit surf, hold the event at a great consistant world class point break.
So glad they pulled this lame event
What an incredible shame. The Quiksilver Pro was the best thing to happen to local surfing in ages. An ASP pro (whose name I’ll withhold) told me ASP and Quiksilver planned to add women’s surfing next year and that the contest was intended to be a staple of the tour for some time. So disappointing that the city of Long Beach, I assume, found a way to lose this great opportunity.
G-Land. Simple.
Yes, G-Land! Where there is REAL surf. And in Brazil it should be SAQUAREMA, not those crappy waves at Arpoador…
So true, the contests at G-Land were so far beyond epic, make it happen!
It’s gotta be G-Land!!
Just a little bit of info from a Long Beach Resident. Every thing you read is B.S. The reason the contest never happened as it had been planned (Music motocross …..) was due to LB politicians. The city council of Long Beach got scared about the size and magnitude of the event, they wanted to back out at the last minute. Hurricane Irene was the perfect scapegoat. The people at Quicksilver know the real deal. They are just being Politically correct. I would guess that Quicksilver wants nothing to do with my city. Mainly because the people that run this city, have their heads up their asses.
Anyway, it does not bother me that they are not coming back. It was a once in a lifetime experience, and it was great.
As a city we didn’t benefit from it in any way except the joy that it brought to so many surfers. I think Quicksilver spent about $250,000 U.S. on salaries for LB workers. Otherwise not a big payday for LB.
slater will probably retire so the yanks wont have much to scream about and if new york happened again the surf will probably be 1 foot shit so hold the event in a location like Gland or some great point break and change the whole scoring dumb old system. The whole ASP the world tour is old and boring, change the system, bring it into the future so it oneday can be recognised as a mainstream sport.
Seriously?!?!
Sorry Antman, but I’m not really following you here…
What do you mean by “bring the sport into the future” and make it mainstream?!
Mate, these days there are events where surfers are rewarded with big scores for one big move (nothing of your 5 to the beach!), events in waves of consequences (15ft Pipe and 10ft Choppes, also Fiji is back this year if you don’t recall!) and pointbreaks (where clearly the surfers with the best rail work, flow and power will come on top, Jordy, Parko and Kelly won on the points this year!).
Mainstream?! I don’t recall watching surfing on TV when forsters was the tour sponsor or having $1M Prize money in a surfing event in the past.
I’m not saying that the Tour is perfect or that there’s no room for improvements, but I don’t remember the Tour being this exciting!
Think the ASP has been doing an amazing job to where it has taken surfing in the past 5 years, specially if you consider that a big part of the surfing audience will be haters no matter what they do!!!! (yet again, we know there’s plenty of room for improvement, but you can only get it right if you try different things!)
The world is changing at crazy pace, and I think ASP has been doing their best to keep up with it…crazy to think that 15 years ago most pro surfer’s training regime involved a few scooners at the pub and travelling accomodation would be a mate’s couch or floor!!
Shame for the LB locals, they seemed quite excited with the event last year…but o’well…
gab right on… I watched just about every event onlne this year, it was great imagery, you could never do that on TV…surfing is not a spectator sport for TV, its days long events for a good week. And the circus in LB was a great once in a life time thing… I got to shoot slater and company in overhead cane swell… been surfing for decades and never once had an opportunity like that…. it was great to see the bro’s battle the sweep and try and stay in position…in fact slater lost because he couldnt stay in the right spot…. Owen Wright nabbed all the best waves cuz he was bigger and stronger and could stay nearest to the best peak off the jetty… if they choose long island again it should be either Montauk or Democrat point…nuff said
Whatever the reasons for not having another event in New York. Isn’t this a blessing in disguise and a good excuse to get back to Gland. Everyone knows the surfers want it and the fans certainly would want to see another event there. The last event held there is still talked about today, plus it show cases surfing at one of the very best locations providing the best possible test for all Pro surfers on the tour today as well as providing a platform for all up and coming Indonesian surfers to show their skills, some of which will be on tour in the future. Quicksilver will gain nothing but respect for the event and……Its the dream tour right??? Do the right thing and get back to the jungle!
Dude, don’t ever do that again or I’ll kick you in the shin and steal your burrito.
There’s a reason major events like that don’t happen in NY. Crooked politicians. Business is business and you can’t run in the negative no matter how good it makes you feel on the inside. Let’s not forget that if bad business decisions are made repeatedly, businesses fail. An “association” is no different. Bummer? Yep. But unfortunately necessary decisions aren’t always popular. Keep supporting the association and Quiksilver, they’re good people. 2012 will still be a great year.
The ASP got totally lucky in NY this year with the surf. That wouldn’t happen again. The so-called Dream Tour has no business being in New York to begin with. It’s insanity that there is no CT event or even Prime or Star events in Puerto Rico, especially with how well the Search went off last year. The local crowd is completely receptive, the surf is epic and consistent but as with everything, I’m sure the sponsors didn’t make enough money off it and as we all know, the ASP is a business more than an association these days. BTW, if you can’t spell ‘Quiksilver’ or ‘stoked’, do you even surf? BRING IT TO PUERTO RICO, ASP!!!
“BTW, if you can’t spell ‘Quiksilver’ or ‘stoked’, do you even surf?” <—True story
It’s a shame probably greedy officials, probably that world recession i’ve heard rumours about, probably kelly’s pay check is to much, probably Dane not gonna be there. At the end of the day it was good for surfing as much as people complain about these events on their local beaches it brings money to there pockets and still they complain. God knows i live in cornwall and if the tourists surfers disappear a local couldn’t afford a swim float never mind a descent board. I also grew up in Thurso Scotland and there were crowds there before the Oneil classic. No disrespect to the east coast(you have some better waves than where i live now) but your not gonna see bali invasion, it would have just been some more money in your pocket for a week of inconvenience and the chance to put some real culture into the sport. Whatever Quicksilvers reason respect to them for taking a big gamble and pulling it off.
of course Perú! this is what happens when the motive is totally extrinsic (meaning money, markets, stoked newbies buying expensive boardshorts they dont need)… circumstances change, no more event… the ulterior motives of companies should be examined for intrinsic motivation towards surfing…
Bummer- absolutely sounds like a money squeeze on Quik by LBNY. In the current economic environment, who can blame any company for being cautious? Could also just be a negotiation tactic on the part of Quik. You do have to be ready to walk away and that’s currently easier to do than ever before. Question for ASP: Will you seek another sponsor to fill the slot, especially if Quik truly only wishes to be involved in two events?
If another sponsor was interested in running the event in 2012, that option would be on the table. However, we are looking at late in the schedule for now.
Hey Crew, it looks like Quik has released a public statement regarding the contributing factors to the event withdrawal (finances mostly) and you can read it here:
According to President of Quiksilver Americas Rob Colby, the company’s decision to not bring the Quik Pro NYC back in 2012 was primarily due to the cost of the event’s production in 2011, the financial losses it incurred mainly due to Hurricane Irene’s wrath, and the need to be cautious in the coming financial year.
“It was a big ticket item—we put a lot of time, people, and money into the event,” explains Colby, who says that the contest came in significantly over budget due to the hurricane. Colby stresses that Quiksilver’s commitment to the ASP and professional surfing is not wavering and that its Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast and Quiksilver Pro France events are still on for 2012.
“We’re going to take a breather for 2012,” says Colby. “The Americas business is doing very well, but we don’t want to lead with our chin—we want to be cautious in 2012.”
Quiksilver will reexamine doing the event in 2013. When asked how significant the 2011 event’s financial hit was, Colby responded, “It was a lot,” but despite that fact, the event was a success on a number of levels including engaging with mainstream media and the New York City market. “We were really pleasantly surprised by attendance during the week,” says Colby, adding that it was a great opportunity to engage the entire area with events in the city and in Long Beach.
Colby says he’s a firm believer in the concept of hosting large surf contests in major metropolitan areas and looks forward to bringing the event back to New York in the future.
Word about is that the Council wanted to put the squeeze on for a couple Million $’s more from Quikki for the next contest. Apparently not a good idea as now they stand to get $0.00. Another great move by mindless bureaucrats….
Why choose? Boycott LBNY, Quik, and ASP. Go freesurf and have fun.
I agree with random dude from NY. now you dont have to listen to the word stoked every 5 seconds and have your lineups more exposed- crowded than they already are. good news for longisland surfers
bring it down to PR you know we’re good for it , but I bet you if things in LB work like here if there’s nothing in it for the politicians they don’t want to know about it.
DIRTYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY….thanks alot bob………..whyy?
ASP International – I think you’re holding back some information here. Quik wouldn’t simply ‘pull out’ of such a successful event without good reason. Did they not like dealing with LBNY? Did the surfers complain about the conditions (which were overall good)? The event was such a hit and positive talk of it rippled around the tri-state area for months among surfers and non-surfers. Big mistake
I mean I wish us east coasters could have seen another event but… GO TO G-LAND!!!
Who canceled, Long Beach or Quiksilver? I need to know so I can either start gathering support to vote out the local politicians or stop purchasing Quiksilver products. After this event so many locals had so many good things to say about the event — many comments were ‘this is the best thing that Long Beach has ever done’, and it was talked about for weeks. It had a positive impact on the community and apparently was a huge win for QuikSilver, so what’s the problem or story that’s not being told here? I’m a non-surfer and was personally looking forward to the event in 2012.
We’re sorry Chris. We don’t have any more information aside from Quiksilver withdrawing from the event in 2012.
What’s up with you Schnabel? Why should you hate Quiksilver for not wanting to repeat, regardless of reason. Actually, it is likely your East Coast mentality that exemplifies the reason? Regardless, I have had firsthand experience with Quiksilver, on a number of levels, and it was first rate in every instance. Very positive environment; very intelligent, professional, and dedicated people, who are dedicated to the lifestyle they represent. I wish them well with whatever and wherever they want to commit to next. We had one WCT in SF, and we’re happy. It was awesome, whether it ever happens again doesn’t matter. Also, the ASP is far and away the best professional sports organization, in my mind. It’s not full of a bunch of paranoid puffed up suits. It reflects surfing in an amazing, grass roots way, while still doing all of the organizational work that needs to be done to make things happen. These events have enriched my life, by spoon feeding me the opportunity to watch the best surfers in the world in a varied palate of surf conditions. They present the right balance of critique and looseness that makes surfing as a community so rad. Frankly, I applaud each and every one of the people who work to make my enjoyment of my passion better every year. Thanks!
mik, dumb comment.
bring it to the outer banks… it could help the island recover from Irene… plus it’s the east coast Mecca
Quicksilver you should take the event to MOROCCO!!! Or PERU!!! Or maybe Fernando de NORONHA?
Yea bro!!! take it to Peru!!!!
long beach changed the contract last minute, even though quiksilver paid a contract for event and concerts. LB didn’t want to pay for extra security cuz they felt spent on the hurricane. however they are happy to pocket the money. thus quiksilver has the right to sue due to violation of terms.
i’m sure this complicated further events for 2012 and on…
eff the city council of LB. dumbass. i felt sorry for the small businesses of that area that were counting on a boost and preparing for it, after the hurricane.
I imagine the 11th hour changes that the City of Long Beach pulled have a major role in the cancellation.
I’m so disappointed in the city, and super upset about the thousands of opportunities that Long Beach, Quicksilver and the ASP will now be missing out on from this partnership.
Im Stoaked that we dont have to see such a kook fest running around our beaches. They should just have an event in bali or something
You’re ridiculous this was great for the city of LB, sorry you were incovenienced for a few days and it’s stoked not stoaked.
kids from long beach use the word stoked?
really fustrating and lame…..so dissapointed…
You may ‘understand’ the reasons but you don’t tell us why!?
Why was it cancelled though? An honest answer would be appreciated. Not too much to ask for…
Sorry guys, when Quiksilver releases their reasons for withdrawal, we’ll be sure to pass those along. At the present, we don’t have that information.
@ASP International: Sorry to pick, but in Dave Prodan’s quote, he already tells us that he understands the factors that let to the withdrawal. What’s up?
Sorry guys. The “factors” will be released at Quiksilver’s discretion. We wish we knew more and were able to let you guys know. If we find out and we’re able to divulge said information, we will.
They cancelled because dealing with the city of Long Beach was a a major headache.
LB is not very accommodating.
