NORTH SHORE, Oahu/Hawaii (Friday, December 16, 2011) - The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink, set an action sports industry record with more than 10.4 million live streams across 13 days of competition between October 28 and December 11 on www.vanstriplecrownofsurfing.com and on mobile devices. Series viewership, which includes the 3-day HIC Pro, peaked with more than 6 million streams were initiated over the three consecutive days of the Billabong Pipe Masters alone from December 8-10.

Overall VansTripleCrownofSurfing.com visitors during the contest period rose from 2.6 million in 2010 to just more than 4 million this year.

This year’s live streams were viewed by more than 1.8 million unique visitors versus 800,000 during the 2010 Vans Triple Crown Season. Results also showed a dramatic shift to hand-held devices with an estimated 25-30% of streams being viewed on mobile devices, many via the Vans Live 2.0 App for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. IPhones alone generated 1.1 million streams, or roughly 10% of viewership.

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing takes place on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, and consists of the Reef Hawaiian Pro, the Vans World Cup of Surfing, and the Billabong Pipe Masters. The most prestigious series in surfing, the Vans Triple Crown rounded out the 2011 ASP World Tour season, and will celebrate 30 years in 2012.

“Surfing’s audience is passionate, active and adventurous, and, if they cannot watch in person, they’re finding Vans Triple Crown of Surfing events on their computers and mobile devices,” says Vans Vice President of Marketing, Doug Palladini. “Hawaii also helps us to reach a broader audience than any other surfing event given it’s incredible scenery, dramatic waves and rich beach culture.”

Vans webcasts are professional full HD productions simultaneously broadcast on television via Oceanic Time Warner Cable in Hawaii, Time Warner Cable in Southern California and the Desert Cities, and on Fuel TV in Australia.

The Vans Live 2.0 app is now available for Android devices, so surf fans can now enjoy watching all of the 2011 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing heats on demand, photo galleries and highlight videos wherever Android apps are available.

  1. William Da Costa Pinheiro Junior says:

imagine how would it be if the asp rules was strictly enforced, with ONLY the WT´s runing the pipemaster and 3 three wildcards permitted, the finals held in the second (but perfect) swell (kellys pick). fair and square.
hope that next year the rules will be followed and not changed at the final event only to accomodate the hawaiian blackmail.
ah but there will be drug tests before the events, how the locals will hand that?

you sound like a police officer who has a crush for kelly.

haha I know a few words in english, I am an ASP fan but I am a SPORT fan more than only surfing and that kind of thing doesn´t happens in other sports. the rules are the same during the hole competition. If there is some kind of pressure, then the hawaian athletes should be punished. no competition in hawaii and no hawaiians running the wt or wqs, so there would be no sponsors in hawaii and they would be more respect for the asp and their athletes (no spanking).

  2. mobetter says:

more languages, more viewers!!! ASP webcasts should be broadcast in english, portugueuse, french, spanish, japanese at every stop

  3. wp says:

would have been higher if it was on tv in the uk!

  4. David Cochrane says:

The numbers certainly indicate how popular the Hawaiian leg is and rightly so! Does the North Shore have the best waves in the world? – Maybe. Are they the hardest? – Definitely! The varying conditions over the 3 contests were as wide as it gets, from small Haleiwa to thick and nasty Sunset to actually surfing pipe lefts! It’s a place where all your surfing skills come into play like no other on the planet and without a doubt amongst the hardest waves to read. So for all of the above, why are the 3 contests not part of the World Title? I’m sure this has been discussed before, but it would be great to see the best of the best in the 3 contests. I recall (I think) in the 80′s the Hawaiian contests had double points so it was like a finals series and the World Title would come right down to the wire!

    • antman says:

@David Cochrane and ASP,yes its very confusing why theres only 1 event there, its just another weird thing with the ASP that does not make sense. Its where surfing originated from and it has the most testing conditions on a small stretch of coastline,Pipe and Sunset should be definately there at the end.Sunset more than any wave should be on the dream tour,it really shows who has technique, power, wave knowledge etc.Pipe and Sunset should be 1st for any event on the world tour.

  5. Ken Williams says:

Green companies would be best since pro surfing has that aura. The presenting sponsors like Quiksilver and Billabong, etc would have to agree to whoever else is advertising.

  6. cns says:

These are huge numbers & would be considered a successful cable show in the U.S. (though the ASP #s are worldwide versus just U.S.). Thus, I cannot understand why surfing webcasts do not attract more mainstream companies. Obviously, because these are worldwide #s, a company local to an area would not be the best advertising candidate, but any international company – numerous alcohol companies, food and drink cos., car cos., computer cos., etc. – could benefit from advertising. ASP – please release the #s of every webcast: they are interesting. These #s are much higher than I would have guessed.
