Everyone who is new to the tour is in consideration for ASP World Tour Rookie of the Year. The decision is based strictly off the ASP World Title rankings, on which Julian finished 9th and Gabriel finished 12th. That said, surfers who entered into the ASP Top 34 for the first time at the midyear point last season will be considered rookies throughout the entirety of 2012. So the rookies in 2012 will be Gabriel Medina (BRA), Miguel Pupo (BRA), John John Florence (HAW), Kolohe Andino (USA) and Yadin Nicol (AUS).

@ ASP,

With regards to Rookie of the Year, was Gabriel Medina up for consideration last year, or did entering at the mid-year rotation remove him from the hunt?

While I agree that Julian Wilson finished higher in the rankings, with half the results Medina came pretty damn close to surpassing him. And he won two events.

Dear ASP,
It looks like one more year has passed and things will not be so different for 2012. It is a good thing to let the fans participate in the ceremony (after all they are the ones who really support the big brands that support the ASP)and the new awards created. However, it is a huge disappointment to see another really good opportunity to pass by. I refer to the way events are organised. Why not include in the awards, a prize for the Greenest , more sustainable event of the year? In a sport totally dependable on the natural environment, there's not one award to give any incentives for event organisers to enhance their green credentials or corporate reponsibility in a sustainable fashion. I praise Rip Curl for their efforts in this direction and hope the ASP open its eyes for the real issues facing surfers and citzens of our planet.
