COOLANGATTA, Queensland/AUS (Monday, January 16, 2012) – ASP International has initiated a new Anti-Doping Policy for the world’s best surfers which will be activated for 2012 ASP World Title season.

“This policy represents a consensus between our surfers, events and administrators in evolving the sport of surfing to a more professional level,” Richard Grellman, ASP Executive Chairman, said. “The desire to initiate this kind of policy has existed within ASP for several years now and with the approval of resource and budget allocation at the November 2011 Board Meeting, we are pleased to announce its activation. We believe this to be an important further step in enhancing professional surfing.”

The new ASP Anti-Doping Policy will apply to ASP Top 34 and ASP Top 17 members competing on the ASP World Title Series and ASP Women’s World Title Series respectively. ASP surfers played a crucial role in the initiation of this policy and are in full support of its activation.

“The men strongly support the implementation of the ASP Anti-Doping policy,” Kieren Perrow, ASP Top 34 competitor and surfers’ representative, said. “It is a positive step which enhances the professionalism of competitive surfing and sends a great message to the kids out there who look up to us as role models.”

The ASP Anti-Doping Policy involves standards prescribed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code and Prohibited List with any testing performed implemented at International Standards.

“As the sport of surfing continues to grow its audience every year, so grow the responsibilities of our athletes,” Jessi Miley-Dyer, surfers’ representative and newly-appointed ASP Women’s World Tour Manager, said. “The activation of the ASP’s Anti-Doping Policy is a logical step in the organization’s continued pursuit of professionalism and has the full support of the women.”

The first stop of the 2012 ASP World Title Series will be the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast from February 25 to March 7, 2012.

Drugs definitely increase performance – its proven.

Various drugs certainly enhance focus, endurance and reduce lactic acid build up.

Imagine that you are surfing and you take a lactic acid reduction drug and stimulants. After a day of surfing you have a massive advantage if you take this stuff because you will feel fresher and have more power as well as less fatigue in your muscles.

With so much cash and glory in winning a pro event it is a huge temptation to anyone to take performance enhancing substances. This is a reaction to that from the ASP and for large sports its needed.

I have friends who are professional athletes and they just get used to having someone watch them pee in a cup. Its not an invasion of privacy – its part of the rules of professional sport and if you want to compete just deal with it.

I think its a great move and is essential to take pro surfing to the next level of professionalism.

Since roids are not being used in surfing this whole thing is a waste of time. Also with Medical Marijuana being legal in cali. it is unfair to stop a person who has their doctors approval from smoking the herb. Weed is a god created plant and has been a part of our culture for over 50 years.Tom Curren was blazing tough the whole time he was on tour and is one of the best surfers of all time I remember watching Derrick Ho puff a fat joint on the beach in cali before a heat and going out and ripping!

  3. Gregorio Randalla says:

I don’t think they are talking about alcohol.
If weed is tested for it could be a problem too.
Neither enhance performance. So, so what.

Cocaine…that crap ruines lives. Maybe this will draw attention to it. Keep groms away from it.

  4. West says:

Anti Doping Testing is great thing only …
If the ASP is going to test surfer for doping, then they need to test every surfer at every event every time, from a Jr. Pro to a 1 Start to CT, not just one guy here, one guy there. As for a surfer using roids to surf better , haha.. that a joke, i would of loved to surf against a dude on roids, doing his jumping jacks pre-heat, the dude would be so heavy he would sink, the only way to surf better is to Surf all day , every day. the surfer would has the most water time is always the best guy in the lineup, ie: Kelly Slater (surfs more than you realize), this year’s Triple crown winner JOHN JOHN ( currently surf more than anyone period). Surfing as a “life style” that is a Dying Breed, the new generation surfs for sticker placement & money.. Wayne Lynch and guys like Todd Morcum are “Life Style” surfer… Wayne who? Todd who? Exactly my point. Slater his whole career has put the beat Down on any who has abused anything, that goes way back before 99% of you every even thought about surfing, from ESA boys division to to his 11th world title.. if you looked back 14 of the pass Tour champions would not of been World Champion’s if this was the policy from the start, (every one of the pass Champs are a mazing people in and out of the water) so stop this pointing the finger at the King AI, and get the story straight.

    1. Caracan says:

West: for your information, some “roids” as you call them, are meant to enhance your performance and endurance, not to get big and ripped. Have you seen tour de France for instance? They got the skinniest frame ever and a lot of them have been tested positive and have been suspended. It is the type of steroids we are talking about bro.

    2. West says:

Same thing call it what you like steroids , roids , cortizone shots, it is all the same thing just depends on how a person takes them. Bike riders have “thin frames” because of all the cardio …DUH!!!

  5. Rem says:

Agree with everything exept pot and alcohal. I’ve never seen anyone get wasted and surf better.. just like people that are baked aren’t going to have perfect timing. If these pro’s can’t enjoy a beer on a lay day.. that’s messed up.

  6. Surf Images says:

I think this is a very smart move! Good job to the ASP.

    E

  7. Ryan says:

    No alchohol? Harsh!

  8. rossco says:

    WTF are you on??!!

  9. leo soares says:

You’ve said everything Bede! The “little asp loved group” would be always heros and have a reserved place at the WT, until they want to be there!

  10. Caracan says:

Great news! I’m 100% sure many surfers do take steroids during the tour. This decision only shows how big our sport is getting and if you cheat you pay the price. Suspensions, fines, even getting kicked off the tour. So, surfers: get real and dont take shortcuts to success.

  11. Charles says:

Its about time.. very respectable.. hats off on this decision.

  12. Jeremy Cannone says:

    No more smoking pot. Hahahaha!!!

  13. outer_cortez says:

Will they be testing for recreational drugs?…..how many times does some one have to test positive before it makes the public arena?……Will this force more cover ups to be made by the surf industry and the asp?………not sure how much impact performance inhancing drugs would have on a surfer vs 100mt sprinter. should be a interesting year!

  14. rossco says:

about time drug testing was activated in the ASP… there’s always the cheats out there??
some succeed, some die?? good to see the head come out of the sand at last, congrats!!!!

    1. Anaru says:

I hope thats not a dig at Andy Irons bro?

    2. Charles says:

Its not a dig to say that a dead person is dead.. Everyone highly respects him, lets leave it at that.

    3. asp police state says:

how is someone smoking a joint cheating ? surfing is a lifestyle no ones buisness but there own . neco got banned because of roids but he was a kook that was never going to challenge for a world title .

    4. COISA RUIM says:

      U R JUST A BUMP WORRIED ABT SMOKING POT….GO GET A JOB.

  15. Rick says:

stop marching to the beat of the NWO, and spend that money on webcasting events like the Sunset Pro Junior event this month.

People have a right to freedom from unreasonable bodily searches when there is no reasonable cause. These policies have done nothing, zip, zero, nada to change the status quo, they are nothing but a foolish dog and pony show.

Webcasting is what made the sport grow, not watching men piss into bottles.

    Thank You.

    1. Bender says:

Unreasonable body searches?? what planet are you on? steroids arent inserted rectally and then left there..

Wouldnt you be pi$$ed if the guy who beat you was taking performance enhancing drugs? i would!

I think its a great thing to bring into the sport – it will show people out their that this is a real sport and the competitiors are some of the fittest athletes in the world.

Webcasts helped the sport grow and this will only improve it.

Mate, they arent concerned with you smoking bongs in your mums garage so stop being so paranoid.

    2. coisa ruim says:

      ahahahaha very good Bender.

    3. mike says:

i agree ,testing is a form of body search and should be illegal!
