Congratulations to Billabong for changing the contest site to Postinho. It made the whole difference. For the first time, Rio could show its thick, powerful, hollow waves.

Florence is arguably the best surfer in the world right now. At minimum, he's probably the most well-rounded surfer of his generation at the moment. Discussing his mojo in waves of consequence would be nothing more than stating the obvious. But the kid showed maturity beyond his years at Sunset, Margs and Bells, and his performances at Lowers and Barra da Tijuca speak to the range of his skill-set. If there were something comparable, imagine taking him on in a game of S-U-R-F? Pundits have a case: Florence is young; his somewhat unique style isn't appreciated by everyone; oftentimes he can appear to be 'over' the scene; and recent history shows that there have been few, if any, serious Hawaiian surfers contending for the world title, save Andy, likely the most well-rounded surfer of HIS generation. All that said, I mean, you've watched his heats, right? Heck, John's leading ALL competitive surfers by nearly 5,500 points, based on the ASP Men’s World Ranking -- that's a little more than a quarterfinal finish in a 'CT event or slightly higher than a second-place PRIME finish on the 'QS. Not to mention his 'CT finish line goes 13, 9, 1. Some curve, huh? I know, I know, let's not get ahead of ourselves. It is only May after all. However, John's light years ahead of Parko, Mick, Kerrzy, Adriano and Taj -- the five surfers in front of him on the ASP World Title Ranking -- when it comes to Fiji and Tahiti, the next two events. If you're not a believer, you will be soon.
