Roxy Waikiki Classic Returns to Oahu June 16 and 17

WAIKIKI, Oahu/Hawaii (Tuesday, June 5, 2012) - The 2012 Roxy Waikiki Classic returns to Kuhio Beach at Queens’ surf break, Waikiki, June 16th and 17th. This FREE two-day, women’s only surfing festival is open to women of all ages (6+up) in both Longboard and Shortboard with plenty of Roxy prizes to be won. There is no entry fee to participate. The goal of the Roxy Waikiki Classic is to encourage girls of all ages and skill levels to take to the ocean and enjoy the waves. The event began in 2011, reaching maximum capacity at 250 competitors.

In addition to the free amateur longboard and shortboard events, there will also be an ASP 1-star women’s professional longboard Qualifier that will showcase talented pro surfers including Roxy’s Kelia Moniz, Chloe Calmon, Vanina Walsh, and Jennifer Smith. ASP membership and entry fee is required for the professional event, and $2,000 in prize money will be up for grabs.

On the beach, there will be free music, giveaways, athlete signings are more for. Paul Mitchell will be at the event giving samples, free hair styling and cool beach product tips for the summer. The Roxy Initiative and Kokua Hawaii Foundation will also be joining the event to set up designated recycling bins and running a free water refill station – bring your own bottle or pick up a Roxy water bottle for a $5 donation to the Roxy Initiative. All donations will be given to the Kokua Hawaii Foundation to support their Plastics Free Schools program.

Event Schedule:
SATURDAY, JUNE 16:
7am – Athlete check-in.
8:30am – Conch blower signals start to the festival. Competition begins, beach activities start.
12 noon – Hula dancers perform on awards stage.
5pm – Surfing competition and beach activities conclude for the day.

SUNDAY, JUNE 17:
7am – Athlete check-in.
8:30am – Competition begins, beach activities start.
12 noon – Live music performance on awards stage.
3pm – FINAL heat of competition.
5pm – Awards ceremony, prize giveaways and event conclusion
