ASP 3-Star Copa Quiksilver El Salvador Returns to Punta Roca

[ 0 ] June 28, 2012 |

PUNTA ROCA, La Libertad/El Salvador (Thursday, June 28, 2012) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Copa Quiksilver El Salvador is slated to return to the perfect righthand pointbreak of Punta Roca in La Libertad, El Salvador from July 4 through 8, 2012.

The third of five ASP North America men’s events, the Copa Quiksilver’s ASP 3-Star status allows both Latin American talent and global up-and-comers the opportunity to assert themselves on the ASP World Ranking.

Michael Dunphy (Virginia Beach, VA), 21, has been consistently competing on the international stage and is looking to sink his teeth into the flawless waves of Punta Roca as one of the event’s top seeds.

“I’m very excited to be able to surf another comp with firing waves,” Dunphy said. “I remember last year I was talking to Shane Beschen and he was comparing it to a warm water J Bay so I’m very excited. Hopefully it comes down to surfing and not hassling. I have been to El Salvador multiple times and every time I have a blast. With warm water right points, it’s hard not to. Punta Roca is a world class wave.”

Dunphy is continually looking to grow as a surfer and could not pass on the opportunity to compete at such a high-caliber wave.

“My plans for this year are the same as every year which is to get better at surfing,” Dunphy said. “I feel if I do that the results will follow.”

Cristobal De Col (PER), 19, is one example of emerging talent to come from Latin America and the Peruvian feels events such as the Copa Quiksilver El Salvador gives underground Latinos the opportunity to shine on an international stage.

“I think having this event is awesome because Latino riders can let the world know about our potential in all kinds of waves,” De Col said. “Our convoy is ready!”

De Col, who competed in last year’s Copa Quiksilver El Salvador is one of many competitors who is excited to return to La Libertad in search of perfect waves while picking up points towards his ASP World Ranking.

“Surfing point-breaks are more challenging, because you can express all of your potential, especially on such a long right,” De Col said. “I surfed Punta Roca before and it is a great point break. To have a contest there is pretty sick!”

The Copa Quiksilver El Salvador holds a waiting period from July 4 through 8, 2012 and will be webcast LIVE via www.quiksilver.com/elsalvador.
